METAL GEAR SOLID Nice touch in MGS3 - when Snake learns The Boss is defecting, his reaction includes some short, jittery rapid eye movement. These movements - known as Saccades - are done subconsciously when the brain is processing difficult information. It also happens when dreaming in deep "REM" sleep.

I’m replaying the series. My thoughts on Ground Zeroes (and V).

    Posted: 14 Jan 2022 12:26 AM PST

I've been a fan of the series for many, many years. I've decided to replay the games chronologically after about 7-8 years, and I've made it to Ground Zeroes.

    My initial impressions:

    • Wow, the graphics haven't aged a bit. This could pass for a PS5 title.

    • The cinematography is, and I don't say this lightly, damn near perfect. Kojima honed his craft over the years, and it shows. The intro cinematic is just genius.

    • The gameplay is fresh but familiar, it plays remarkably well. Guns of the Patriots was a leap in 2008, and Ground Zeroes proved that Metal Gear was still the pinnacle of stealth for the new era 6 years later.

    • Its tone is relatively moody and grim compared to the other games. My opinion is entirely subjective, but I love that Kojima took the series in such a dark direction.

Replaying Ground Zeroes, such a promising prequel, reminds me of why I was letdown by The Phantom Pain. Don't get me wrong; V is an 8/10 experience though I was dreaming of a masterpiece. It was advertised as "the missing link" of the series, it was to be Big Boss' dark chapter, the catalyst of lovable action hero to warlord and criminal.

The Phantom Pain is a technical masterpiece, even now being the standard for stealth action. But its minimal story left much to be desired, which is ultimately why I and many others love the series. To this day, it hurts to think about. It's not what it is that disappoints me, but what it isn't, what it teased itself to be.

There are so many excellent scenes (the hospital, Sahelanthropus, quarantine), but there's an equal number of missed opportunities; Liquid was grossly underutilized, Venom is practically mute, Ocelot doesn't feel like himself, and the lack of a story that realizes Big Boss' descent into madness. I felt I was advertised one thing, and given another. I have a hard time believing it was deliberate like Sons of Liberty (my favorite in the series).

I'll keep an open mind when I replay V, but for now I'm just in awe at how excellent Ground Zeroes is.

Just played through the legacy collection on my ps3 and mgs4 is still my favourite.

It was the height of the series for me and I wish mgsv followed the same formula but with a bit less cut scenes and a bit more gameplay. Mgsv should have been a mix of open ended outdoor gameplay with more indoor areas and the same boss formula that made me really love mgs games.

can someone help me out finding this obscure media?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2022 08:11 PM PST

so from what i know, it was a peace walker style cutscene where psycho mantis was trying to get codes for something but snake (not sure if solid or naked) realized that someone didn't have an arm (either ocelot or kaz) and managed to beat the illusion, I've searched everywhere and i couldn't find it... was it some sort of high quality oc with clean drawings and animations?
