    MGS1 and MGS2 Impressions

    Posted: 21 Jun 2021 10:39 AM PDT

    Hi!

My 19th birthday was the third of June, and my sister bought me the Metal Gear Legacy Collection for PS3. This was my first time playing a metal gear game, so i decided to write here my first impressions here, after finishing MGS2.

    P.S

    • Those are quick thoughts, so they are not well organized.
    • The points are in no order
    • I did not play Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
    • It doesn't matter too much, but i accidentally bought the american version (I'm Italian). So, i had to rebuy MGS1, and because of this i've played the Italian version of it, while the other games (MGS2 too) are the american one.

    Let's Go

    Metal Gear Solid

    What i Knew Before starting:

    • Revolutionary in videoludic storytelling
    • Robot Ninja cuts the hand of a Cowboy
    • Psyco Mantis does crazy shit with the memory card and controller and you have to change port

    What i liked:

    • This game is basically a metroidvania with an emphasys on the plot (Metroid: Other M flashbacks....) But it is really good!
    • The cinematics really helped the story, even if the models looked kinda like blurry Barbie dolls (But that's understandable, it's a ps1 game)
    • It did many things to make the gameplay feel more authentic and varied. I especially liked the fact that Snake got a cold, and you had to find the medicine, and the card temperature mechanic
    • The sneaking gameplay was especially fun, even if i usually ended up killing everybody.
    • I really did not expect the Liquid/Master plotwist, and i completly forgot about Ocelot until the end plotwist
    • Liquid had a good motivation, even if in the end he just went crazy

    What i did not like:

    • The character of Nastasha felt very useless and underutilized
    • I found annoying when you had to find the Pgs1and leave Wolf's Boss fight (while it was an original idea)
    • I found some boss fights too difficult and unfair (Especially Metal Gear Rex) but that's probably subjective (I played on Normal difficulty)
    • The controls were sometimes an obstacle, and very clunky (But that's an old game, so it's understandable)
    • The game felt extremly short (I finished it in 8 hours)
    • That's a thing specific to the Italian Version, but the dub was very strange, with some characters speaking very quickly. Only Snake and Liquid had good VAs

    Ending and Final Thoughts:

I liked that the game had the balls to kill Meryl, since it does add a lot to Snake's character. I found strange that Liquid survived all of that before getting killed from Foxdie, but eh, he died in the end (Or did he..?). Btw, that's not how genetics work Hideo! I liked the gene moral of Naomi, but i feel that the fact that Snake returned "fighting" in the sequel ruined it a bit...

Overall a good game, i'd give it an 8/10.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (HD)

    What i Knew Before starting:

    • The game trolls you making you think you play as Snake, but instead you play as the girl/boy "Bellicapelli" Raiden
    • The villain has a good motive and he is Dr Octopus
    • The ending is a giant wtf moment

    What i liked:

    • The new things added to the gameplay felt very natural and added a lot to it. I especially liked the kick move and the hiding corpses
    • Many tricks were very clever, like when you have to move Fatman's body to find the bomb and the c4 on the bridge between shell 1 and 2 that was behind you.
    • I liked the dynamic of having to cooperate with Snake and Peter, working as a team
    • The part of the ending when the colonel was bugged was so creative, reminded me of Undertale's Neutral Ending and Flowey closing the game
    • The English dub was better than the Italian's

    What i did not like:

    • I wanted to say that the plot and some situations were too similar to MGS1, but the ending solved that
    • The Fatman "arc" felt a bit filler, but was fun
    • The plot itself had too many plotwists for my liking. At the same times, it kept adding elements to it, making it too much complicated in some points
    • The end of the story itself felt rushed, without a real conclusion.
    • The game felt once again too short (I finished it in 15 hours) and the map felt littler than the first game's.
    • How the hell is Liquid alive?
    • Some cutscenes were too long, my controller kept shutting down

    Ending and Final Thoughts:

The message about memes (With the original meaning of the word) is a perfect complimentary for the gene's of the first one. The ending was very confusionary, but i think it was perfect to make the player identify with the confusion and shock that Raiden is living. The story tho, as already said, felt rushed. Where did Liquid-Ocelot go? If i'm not wrong, the Third one is set in the past, so i'll have to wait for that. In the end, the game felt like a Demo, showing some new mechanics, but not utilising them to the fullest. I hope that MGS3 is what comes out of this experiment.

    I give it a 6.5/10

So, i'm going to play MGS3. If you liked my opinions, i'll tell you what i think about it too!

Goodbye, and thanks for the attention.

Why did Kojima make peace walker so important to the story?

    Posted: 21 Jun 2021 12:10 PM PDT

Its seems weird to make a portable-only (and hd version on ps3) game be so important to the overall story. If he wanted to fill the gap between 3 and 5, why not just make 5 a sequel to 3? Or, make peace walker as a ps3 game on the mgs4 engine. I played all the number titles and I felt very lost playing 5. I didnt know who the girl was, and some other characters and events. How important is it after all? Is it enough to just play the numbered titles?

Started getting more into Metal Gear Solid, but I lack a lot of story(+) knowledge. Could anyone give me a reliable summary?

    Recap of MGS1

    Posted: 21 Jun 2021 05:42 AM PDT

I've decided to pick up the MGS series for the first time. Unfortunatley I am unable to play MGS1 and have to start with 2. I've watched a no-commentary playthrough and read a synopsis. I just need someone to check if this is correct:

Elite military unit (FOXHOUND) goes rogue and hijacks a nuke base in Alaska on the island of Shadow Moses. Island Contains MG REX a nuke robot walker thing. Snake gets on the island, Ocelot loses an arm, he meets a ninja robot (his dead friend?) and his bosses niece. Bit of action later, turns out he's twins with the Foxhound leader (and also the POTUS?). They're both clones of Big Boss. Stuff goes down, Rex is destroyed and turns out Snake had an Anti-foxhound virus in him. He kills Liquid and saves niece-woman.
