    Metal Gear Rising Question

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 09:08 AM PDT

I am trying to S rank all missions without damage. I just finished r-03 S ranking all encounters with no damage up until the fight with Monsoon. Apparently, I took damage (LIES) so I ended up getting an A for that fight and with that an A for the whole mission. My question is, do I have to go through the entire mission again S ranking every encounter again with no damage, or can I just fly through all of the encounters and just S rank Monsoon? I have a feeling I'm not gonna like the answer tho ):

I've never been able to replay MGSV, and I could never put a finger on why until now. (Spoilers)

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 12:27 AM PDT

The entire series is my favorite in gaming, and the world of Metal Gear is so charming to me, but when I play thru the series about once every few years, I just kinda leave it at Peace Walker.

The series still makes sense in that I can imagine MSF becoming Outer Heaven and Solid Snake battling ZEKE just as easily as I can imagine Venom having an identity crisis and facing down Snake. But I lose steam a few hours into MGSV and just.... Stop playing.

I'm not sure if the story can be enjoyed more than once. As sparse and dissociative the story is, it's a very emotional experience. The characters are all dulled compared to the boisterous exaggeration of emotion in the other stories, but the last entry is the only game that has the weight to brainwash you, the player.

Obvious parallels to 1984 can be drawn, from the "Big Boss is Watching" to Ocelot's "2+2=5" Easter egg, to the game taking place in 1984. But the idea of doublethink goes under the radar a bit.

Doublethink is to hold two contradictory opinions simultaneously, knowing they contradict, but believing it anyways. It's something you know is untrue, but you ignore all evidence to the contrary because it doesn't fit the narrative you want to believe.

I played MGSV for the first time when it came out. I remember all the videos and theories about Venom being Gray Fox, and I immediately wrote it off as contrived. The main character being a body double for the culmination of the entire story arc is frankly kind of stupid.

When I got to the face editor at the start of the game it made me so angry, but was relieved it was a fake out. Two characters have the same voice actor and one has a covered face. It's gotta be Boss's subconscious, even though that cant be true because he takes physical actions that affect other characters.

More and more inconsistencies started showing up. I assumed that Boss needing a Russian translator was just a minor mistake, everyone speaking Russian the whole time in MGS3 is basically on the level of a fan theory in terms of story beats that are actually important.

The Mammal Pod A.I. hesitated when addressing Snake. These moments are sprinkled throughout the story, just enough to get under the skin of people who were aware of the body double theory but didn't want it to be true.

And none of us really wanted it to be true. We were promised Big Boss's downfall, to see him turn into the huge villain we knew he'd become, and if he's a body double, we'll never see that happen. With the Konami drama we knew it'd be the last game. Now or never.

That denial was so deep in me that when I got stuck figuring out how to unlock more side missions, I checked the metal gear wikis and saw it plain as day on the webpage: "Recommended articles, Revolver Ocelot, Kazuhiura Miller, Big Boss, Venom Snake"

I knew I got spoiled right there. Two different articles for two different characters. It all checks out factually, Venom is Boss's body double. But I still, still, still denied it. Obviously, the fans running the site set up the Venom page as kind of an inside joke for other fans.

The game had me convinced, thoroughly, that 2+2=5.

It nestled so deep in my brain that as the drama unfolds with Eli, when the Diamond Dogs give him a DNA test, and he is not related at all to Venom, I somehow rationalized it as "well that can't be Liquid then." And at that point, Liquid Snake was my favorite character in the entire series.

I was still making up nonsense twists and ignoring outside media in the 11th hour because that man is Big Boss dammit and I won't see it any other way. The last cutscene shattering it all elevated an "it was all a dream" level twist ending into something more meaningful than that.

It was slapboxing with my own psyche. A pickup basketball game against human psychology. It's integral to our development to imagine how we'll react to future situations, to be psychologically prepared for it if and when they appear in the future.

Every kid plays house, every teen plays "would you rather", every musician imagines themselves on stage.

MGSV prepared me for the assault of the senses the late 10s and early 20s has been as a society. Cancel culture, racial identity politics, the ever changing definition of "gender", political division, the pandemic.

We're all instructed by the mainstream to be so opinionated on every hot button topic that we want to turn our noses up at anyone that doesnt think, feel, or sometimes look exactly as we do. I personally believe the zeitgeist of division is done to us on purpose. It's a mystery to me why that is.

But MGSV taught me what it felt like to doublethink, and by recognizing it I can overcome it when I'm navigating the real world, playing for keeps over real issues with consequences.

So I don't replay the game, because I already know the objective truth of the Diamond Dogs. It's not as fun to play as it is to analyze.

Why does Venom Snake smash the mirror?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 04:16 PM PDT

At the end of phantom pain, its revealed that you were actually the medic who was hypnotized to believing you were the Big Boss. You can also see that he smiles, which I assume means that he finds it amusing and kinda accepts the role of playing Big Boss. However, we can see snake flip the cassette and walk in front of the mirror again and his face is covered in blood. I always knew that the D-Dog logo switched to Outer Heaven, but just realized that it might be a time jump. He then smashes the mirror which is maybe him no longer viewing BB as a legendary hero and more of an asshole, forcing him a role he never asked? Idk, what do you guys think?

Replaying MGSV: I have many thoughts, but if there is one thing I truly adore, It's the aesthetic of MGSV. I've always been so attracted to the Japanese' approach to 3rd person Action or Horror games.

Ground Zeros versus The Phantom Pain

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 12:06 PM PDT

Just started playing TPP. I'm really into it. Been seeing some talk about how GZ is a better game. I think I agree. However, I do have a theory/reading of TPP: I don't know how intentional this is or not, but I think the vibe of the gameplay matches the vibe of the story in TPP better than we might at first believe. It occurred to me while I was clearing out YET ANOTHER tan farmhouse during a sandstorm that I thought about how spiritual ennui/"Soul Death" is a big theme here. During a sandstorm I'm listening to that very cool Man Who Sold the World remix and suddenly everything feels empty, boring, and repetitive. This song is an anthem of spiritual vacancy and eternal boredom. It was perfect and beautiful. Why else would a person sell the world? And then I'm thinking of Big Boss's blank stare from the helicopter in transit to the next mission. He's broken, damaged, lonely, sad, empty, etc. "I can clear out every terrorist camp every day for the rest of my life and I might never see one notch of change. The only thing that seems to happen is that I keep losing myself. Literally pieces of myself." And does it even matter that he isn't who he thinks he is? TPP is sort of the logical and extreme conclusion to Snake's discussion with Raiden at the end of MTS2:SOL. All "Big Boss" can say with any certainty is that he was there. Did he do good? Did he change anything?

So am I proposing that Kojima intentionally created a stagnant and empty feeling world to hammer in this empty soul feeling? Another way to say: is Kojima capable of doing this? After Death Stranding, it sounds plausible. I could see him ending MGS with Snake getting shot in the head during a gas station robbery. Not even hearing the shot, middle of the day, counting out some ones.

Less Terminator, more No Country for Old Men.

    Fob invader rushing cheating?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 03:40 PM PDT

Just had a invader rush to my last platform lvl 52 lethal midrange base in 3 min. He was detected in first 7 seconds, and ran around on last platform for 5min, killing 20 guards. Don't know what defense I could do. I had mines and uavs.

I have had previous invaders I suspected of cheating such as the wouldn't die and would their corpse would just lie there on platform no matter how much I shot them. Their PF page also disappeared from my intruders list. Are many invaders using cheats, will going nonlethal weapons help?
