9/11 in Metal Gear and How it Happened Posted: 24 Jun 2020 04:04 PM PDT Okay, so we know 9/11 happened within Metal Gear based on what Sundowner tells Raiden in 2018. The question is: How? If you look at the timeline, it makes absolutely no sense for there to be a massive terrorist attack on the United States on September 11, 2001. Metal Gear 2 and Metal Gear Solid - set in 1999 and 2005, respectively - tell us that the world is pretty okay during that timeframe. There's still wars and shit indicated by both Sundowner's backstory and the fact that "Gulf War syndrome" was coined a term, but overall nothing that would indicate that there's been some world-altering attack on American soil by foreign agents. Now, go back a few decades to the prequel games and think about Camp Omega. The big elephant in the room during Ground Zeroes is that a torture camp like this just would not exist in that way without a 9/11-style terrorist attack. That's why the real life equivalent was set up in 2002. This leads me to believe that something must have happened prior to when it was established in "the 1970's" that would change all that. Let's go back to Sundowner for a moment. He specifically mentioned the Invasion of Panama and the Gulf War as conflicts he was involved in as part of the US military. He's also unambiguously a soldier during the time when 9/11 must have happened, both because he mentions Iraq and Afghanistan as well as how fondly he seems to remember it. That doesn't mean that these are the only conflicts he was part of, however. I think we can all agree Sundowner seems to be on the older side of things. He's bald, he's got wrinkles, he fights like a brute compared to his more agile teammates and Raiden. Late 40's to mid 50's at the bare minimum, right? So, if we consider his backstory, he's supposed to have joined the military basically right after high school since he didn't have money for college. We'll say he's 18 for the sake of the argument give or take a couple of years of bumming around his hometown working at a mechanic shop or a gas station or something. For the sake of the argument, I'm putting him at maybe 1955 or so. He dropped out of the military and joined a PMC around 2008, meaning he'd be about 53 by that point, a respectable age to retire from active duty if you're going above and beyond but not so old that he wouldn't still be able to fight if he wanted to (and he definitely wanted to). If we take 2014 as the earliest date the common PMC population could get cyborg enhancements following the destruction of The Patriots, that would put him at 59 at the youngest when he was converted into a cyborg, pretty in line with his appearance. Going back in time to Camp Omega, we know it would have to have existed since at least 1974 as Paz and Chico were taken there in 1975 (and Big Boss may or may not have visited the camp in 1974 if we take the side-ops as literally happening in Camp Omega instead of just a similar facility). This means that any point in 1973 or earlier would be a valid date for a terrorist attack like 9/11 as it took around a year for them to start up the real life equivalent. Returning to Sundowner, if we accept he was born sometime around 1955, that means he'd be exactly 18 in 1973, the perfect age to enlist and fight in a War on Terror. With all this in mind, I propose that the Metal Gear equivalent to 9/11 did, in fact, happen on September 11, but in 1973 instead of 2001. But here's where things get interesting. Who would have done the attack? It couldn't be anyone in the Middle East. We know as much since, in 1984, the United States is still backing and training the Mujaheddin given Kaz's involvement in Afghanistan prior to the start of Phantom Pain. You bet your ass the US would pull out of there like lightning if they had evidence any group in that region attacked America regardless of if they were also fighting the Soviets. And there's your answer right there: The Soviets did 9/11. But that's not the end of the story. We know that Snake and Liquid were born in 1972, right? And at some point during that time, Big Boss learns about Less Infants Terrible and leaves The Patriots, at which point Zero renames them into Cipher and starts relying on Skull Face and XOF more. The thing about that is that Skull Face has always wanted to usurp Zero. We also know that XOF is in charge of Camp Omega. So wouldn't it just be so convenient if there was suddenly a major terrorist attack on US soil that justified Skull Face getting a lot more power and freedom to do as he liked with XOF, consented to by both the government and Zero? Therefore, I hold that the 1973 version of Metal Gear's 9/11 was a false flag operation undertaken by Skull Face and XOF posing as Soviet soldiers in order to seize more power and autonomy while fanning the flames of conflict between the US and USSR for his own ends. Yes, the real answer is that the plot of the series has never been coherent and has had to try and predict the about five years into the future every single game and that Kojima probably didn't expect 9/11 to happen when he had Liquid ranting about how the world's gone soft in the far off year of 2005 because no one goes to war anymore. And, yes, I know the timeline at the end of Phantom Pain and shit already says all of the Bush presidency happened under Solidus despite that not really making any sense. Just pretend that there was a 9/11 Part 2 in 2001 since the cycle of violence and repeated events where no one learns anything are kind of a big part of the series' themes. This is just more fun to think about than to just write it off. [link] [comments]
Memorable quotes in the franchise Posted: 24 Jun 2020 02:52 PM PDT What are some of the best quotes you heard while playing the game? About to jump in MGS4, what the hell is going on? Posted: 24 Jun 2020 12:04 PM PDT Alright, I've played practically every Metal Gear, excluding Revengeance (Getting to it), and I'm just about to jump into MGS4 for the first time. I don't exactly have the time/liberty to replay all the other Metal Gear games to get to this point, so I was wondering if anybody has a tl;dr version of what was happening preceding all of this. I can just about remember Sons of Liberty, barely remember Twin Snakes, so a "This happened which caused this to happen, so now this is going on" would be amazing! Why am I not using google? I did, but no sources are exactly clear or concise, because Kojima = Kojima. [link] [comments]

I need a High Resolution Full Body image of Big Boss. Posted: 24 Jun 2020 01:05 PM PDT I have the ability to print on vinyl, which can they be applied to corrugated material, which then can custom cut via a table top cutting station. I want to print out a life sized Big Boss so my SO and I can salute him as we leave our apartment (don't @ me, we're neck deep in Metal Gear right now.) Preferably from MGS5 or GZ, but anything really will do. For the life of me I CANNOT find a decent image where his entire body is in view. Would anyone have one....laying around? And or know where I can find one. - If I can find one, I'll post a completed print whenever I get around to it. [link] [comments]

Trying Portable Ops for the first time - possibly underrated? Posted: 24 Jun 2020 01:11 AM PDT I'm a biiig MGS3 fan but Strangely i think Portable Ops plays better than the Vita port of MGS3. Heresy i know, but MGS3 is a less forgiving game whereas Portable Ops was designed for handheld from the beginning. Hence the radar etc. It's definitely a handheld experience for better and for worse, whereas the Vita port of MGS3 is more for obsessives like me rather than a version I'd recommend to most people. Posted: 24 Jun 2020 07:51 AM PDT I've been really confused about the future of the franchise. I mean, the series has been over for almost 5 years. Kojima left Konami to pursue his other projects. Metal Gear Survive came along. Nothing Metal Gear related has been announced at the PS5 reveal, and Konami still owns it. So what happens next? I'm a huge Metal Gear fan, and I know the main storyline is all but wrapped up. But a part of me is still hoping for some sort of continuation (Hell, I'll take a MGRR sequel at this point). At this point, are we ever going to see another Metal Gear game? [link] [comments]
