Double meaning for The Phantom Pain (TPP)? Posted: 30 Oct 2019 03:02 AM PDT Not sure if i'm reaching for the stars, but I've had this random idea that perhaps MGS5 "The Phantom Pain" is commentary on Third Person Perspective games. That The immersion/Pain felt in a third person perspective game is Phantom due to it being viewed "outside of the body". . Compared to a first person perspective game for example. Now I understand that it's called the Phantom pain due to the idea of loss and amputation of a limb. But let's take a look at the definition provided by mayoclinic: " Phantom pain is pain that feels like it's coming from a body part that's no longer there..." The body part that's no longer there. We aren't necessarily meant to assume we're Big Boss but more that we are controlling Big Boss. The immersion is no longer there. T.P.P, The Phantom Pain/Third Person Perspective Apologies if this comes off as bizarre or nonsensical. Please let me know your thoughts, and thanks for reading. [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Oct 2019 08:47 AM PDT So, I'm on my third playthrough of TPP, and I am paying close attention to the story as I play through. I'm especially focused on the part of the story where Snake drops into Africa for the first time. From the moment Big Boss' boots hit the ground, he and Miller ignite a war in the region. Your first mission is to blow up an "oily seperator" for an environmental NGO, but why? What's the purpose of these actions when it comes to your private army pursuing Skull Face? After this mission, and during the missions that follow, it is clear that people are getting questioned and tortured to find out the reason behind the attack, as found in "Lingua Franca". The game doesn't let up there, either. Miller exclaims that you should steal weapons and supplies from UNITA, because they are "better in your hands", and you are tasked with rescuing Intel Agents that wouldn't have been in danger in the first place if you weren't causing chaos in Africa. I imagine that the events of this part of the story would appear all over the news, especially the strange explosion at an Angolan oil facility, or the spread of infectious parasites in the weeks that followed. As you proceed throughout the missions, you are blindly following Miller's orders to assasinate military leaders for a General to save face. Why? What are BB and Miller even doing at this point in the game? The only thing I can think of is that Kojima was trying to show the parallels between the game and real-world politics of the time. After WW2, the world was split in two - East and West. BB and Miller represent the west and SkullFace is the East, each trying to defeat each other. Africa and Afghanistan are both caught up in this conflict. Both sides think they are doing what they think is right, but you, as the player, are stealing resources, killing locals, and causing environmental disasters in the name of your cause. I admit that maybe I'm reading too much into the subtext of this game, but I can see the parallels to reality, and I'm pretty sure this was Kojima's intention. Edit: I royally messed up on the BB/Venom distinction. Hey, sometimes I forget the distinction between the two. If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it might still be the medic from Ground Zeroes. [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Oct 2019 12:19 PM PDT Bienvenue power bottoms! For years I've heard that the MGS games are some of the best games ever made. I was always an xbox user so I feel like I missed out. Now I have all the games ready to go except for MSG1. So is it okay to skip the first one and go straight to Sons of Liberty? Also, should I play the games in chronological order or by release? P.S. This is the first time I've ever played and I know absolutely nothing about the games, except the fact you fight boss at the end of the third one for reasons I don't know, so please don't post spoilers. Metal Gear Solid Phantom Pain - not your average open world game huh? Posted: 30 Oct 2019 11:49 AM PDT So I started playing this game for the first time today. I have the definitive edition. And I started playing Ground Zeros first. As someone who loves open world games, I like to explore, collect collectables and finish missions slowly. No rushing. I also like to 100% every game I play. By that I mean get the Platinum trophy. I play on PS4. So I was playing the first mission. I completely ignored the main objective and went for side activities and collectables using gamepressure guide. Took me almost and hour before I got to the main objective. Finished it and found out that I got a B. Best score is S. I didn't know that time you needed to be fast and stealthy to get the best score. I guess I'm going to have a difficult time getting used to playing this game as not your average open world game where you explore and take your time. Any tips to make this game better for me somehow. Do I just have to get used to being fast and stealthy on every mission I'm going to do to get highest score out of them? Thanks! Everyone's Favorite Load Out in MGS V? Posted: 30 Oct 2019 01:53 PM PDT Not necessarily the most optimal for FOB missions or MGO or highest damage output or whatnot. Just your favorite Loadout for doing story missions and roaming around Afghanistan or The Congo. Excluding any missions needing Missile launchers, I always go back to the UNARC HB with AMRS sniper barrel for great range and grouping and the 75 round drum. The WU tranq pistol (or the Burkov tranq depending on my mood.) And the AMRS tranq rifle. There are so many different weapon types and options that I have a hard time imagining myself using or am unsure what in game scenario they would be appropriate for so I was wondering if you guys had any radically different favorite options.
