Drawings I did of Solid Snake and Iroquois Pliskin

Well, here I am playing my first ever PSP game and the game that got me into this amazing franchise. Some people might not like it, and I can see why. But for me it has a special place in my heart.

Vamp’s regeneration powers in MGS4 makes no sense

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 11:30 AM PST

In MGS4, it's stated that the reason that Vamp doesn't die from gunshot wounds is because of nanomachines, and those nanomachines automatically regenerate his wounds. And you can see those wounds heal in real time. But this is a clear contradiction to what happens in MGS2. In MGS2, when Vamp gets shot by Raiden, his bullet wounds don't regenerate. Also when Vamp uses his knife to make cuts into his body (to indicate the number of his victims) those wounds don't heal either.

I know MGS4 is filled with retcons but this is one that always particularly bothered me.

A Hind D!? Metal Gear Solid Pixel art by Bryan Heemskerk

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 06:58 AM PST

A comprehensive guide to every Metal Gear Solid game and it's version, ranked best to worst.

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 03:34 PM PST

(none of the flairs except for the Drebins Discount Shitpost Sundays are shown for me, so I can't flair it currently) original source - https://www.reddit.com/r/metalgearsolid/comments/8cmxft/best_versions_to_play_the_series_for_the_first/dxg6df7?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3 I just tweaked it a bit, to make it more relevant.

    Metal Gear Solid

    1) PS1 version, playable on PS1, PS2, PS3 or emulated.

This is the original release of the game. Alternatively you can opt for the Essential Collection, Legacy Collection, or PSN Classic releases. There is also emulation, which allows for widescreen hacks, higher resolution and texture upscalers which make the game look better.

    2) PC version

This is where you have to make compromises. The PC port of MGS1 is flawed and works inconsistently across systems. Gamepad support is iffy and some FMVs don't play correctly, but it's fixed in the GOG release. The worse things are the dowgrades such as some visual effects (mostly color filters) gone, the soundtrack being shorter and the overall audio quality being worse, some guy tries to restore the audio trough, but he didn't restore the boss music. The game also has a weird save system and is prone to crashes on some hardware. However, it's not the worst version of Metal Gear Solid. I recommend reading more about it here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9739731

    3) Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (GameCube/Emulator)

It's bad. Take it from me, someone who's beaten TTS dozens of times, it's really not worth playing, especially as your introduction to MGS1. It's uglier than the original PS1 version, mechanics retrofitted from MGS2 break the game's balance, the soundtrack is fucked, cutscenes are poorly directed, the dialogue was red one and is worse, and many, many other problems. You're honestly better off waiting until you can find a copy of MGS1 at your local pawn shop than start with Twin Snakes.

    X) Metal Gear Solid: Integral - Japanese Only

Probably the best version of MGS1, but the PS1 port has Japanese text only. If you can read Japanese I'd highly suggest going for this one and not playing on the Very Easy difficulty.

    Metal Gear Solid 2

    1) HD (PS3, PSVita, XBox 360)

The HD collection version is the objective best way to experience MGS2, as it both looks and runs great. The skateboarding minigame is missing but it's irrelevant and isn't that great anyway.

    2) MGS2 Substance/Essential Collection (PS2, Xbox Classic, emulation, PC W/ V's fix)

The rerelease of MGS2. It contains new modes and extras. Not much to say here.

    3) MGS2 Sons of Liberty (PS2, emulation)

The original release of MGS2. Nothing special, MGS2 Substance is just this one but with more stuff.

    4) PC version (vanilla)

The vanilla PC port of MGS2 Substance. Has issues with modern hardware, contains texture bugs, gamepad support issues, etc. Probably the worst version of the game, but it's playable at the very least. Last resort option.

    Metal Gear Solid 3

    1) HD (PS3, PSVita, XBox 360)

Once again, the best version of the game. Looks great, plays great. Includes Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake on disc. The things cut this time (snake vs monkey, duel mode and guy savage) were a bit better and more worth playing trough.

    2) MGS3 Limited Edition (PS2)

Effectively the same as the PS2 version of MGS3 Subsistence, but with a third disc that contains a 3.5 hour long movie. Rare and relatively expensive.

    3) MGS3 Subsistence (PS2)

The rerelease of MGS3 with the improved third person camera. The second disc included duel mode (boss rush), snake vs monkey (with the two added levels from the European version of SE), secret theater, a linkup mode for Metal Gear Acid 2 that uses the PlayStation Portable's Solid Eye peripheral to view pictures taken in Metal Gear Solid 3 and metal gear online. The European version also has the third disc from the limited edition and a signature of Hideo Kojima at the bottom right corner of the cover.

    4) MGS3 3D (3DS)

Uh, not sure how this one plays, not gonna lie. Apparently it's got framerate issues and is really only playable with the Circle Pad Pro peripheral, but it has the most detailed models. If you're gonna go mobile, play the Vita version instead. I have it, it's good.

    5) MGS3 Snake Eater (PS2)

AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Seriously, the original release of Snake Eater is fucking garbage. It kept the top-down camera from the first games and it causes constant gameplay issues. I hated this game when I first played it, and it's all because I bought the Snake Eater version - it's unplayable. But to be fair if you comepleted MGS3 and MGA and then plugged your PSP and PS2 you could unlock some extra stuff in ac!d and I don't know if it's available in subsistence.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

    PS3

It's the only version. Enjoy. Buying the Special Edition gets you a neat BluRay disc that's got some behind the scenes content. I also recommend trying to set up MGO2R, it's the best multiplayer stealth game out there (MGO3 is a joke in comparison).

    Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

    1) HD Collection (PS3, 360)

Despite the fact that Peace Walker was originally on the PSP, it was the only one of the three games in the HD collection to not get a Vita release for some reason. Fuck it, I dunno. HD Collection plays fine, looks fine.

    2) PSP

Original release of Peace Walker. Good for on the go, but the low framerate and awkward controls kinda kill it for me.

    Metal Gear Solid V

    1) PC

Shouldn't even have to explain this one. Shit's good. It even supports mods.

    2) PS4/XBOne

The console and PC versions of V are pretty similar, but the PC version looks and plays better. Not much else to say, this one is solid.

    3) PS3/XBox 360

Really, I'm impressed this game is on these two consoles at all. Without direct comparison, it's hard to tell the 7th gen and 8th gen versions apart. You honestly can't even go wrong with these two.

    Collections

    1) Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection (PS3)

It includes digital code for MGS1, VR missions/MGS integral (JP), MGS HD collection (MGS2, MGS3, PW) and MGS4. The best collection currently.

    2) Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection (PS2)

It includes MGS1 in a PS2 case, MGS2 Substance and MGS3 Subsistence but only disc 1, and they all have new artwork on the cover art. Obsolete at this point.

    Optional

Okay, the games here aren't canon according to Kojima, but they treat themselves as tie-ins and are worth playing anyways.

    Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Four years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4, we find that Raiden has joined up with a private security organization known as Maverick in an attempt to promote peace and protect the weak. While rebuilding an African nation ravaged by civil war, the Prime Minister is attacked by rival PMC group Desperado and taken hostage.

    1) PC

The most accessible way to play the game today, and you get the best graphics, some mods and every DLC from consoles built-in.

    2) PS3/Xbox 360

It's alright, if you have your PSN account set to US you get every DLC for free, but you still have to pay for them in the EU (I found it out the hard way).

    Metal Gear Solid: Portable ops

Set in 1970 in South America, six years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 3, the game follows the exploits of Big Boss after his former unit, FOX, goes renegade. The game also chronicles the eventual founding of FOXHOUND, as well as the inspiration of the military state Outer Heaven. I recommend playing it after snake eater.

    1) Portable Ops

The normal version of the game, nothing to worry about.

    2) Portable Ops Plus

It really expands the multiplayer, but it removes the story mode and replaces it with a mission mode where you just walk around the multiplayer maps, but it's not worth it today. While the servers are down, you can still get it to work online, I don't think that anyone plays it trough.

    Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions

MGS integral included 300 new VR missions, they got released in the rest of the world as Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions. It's interesting, there are some wierd missions, there are some funny ones, you can even play as Grey Fox in three of them. The PC release also has them all unlocked instantly.

    Metal Gear: Survive

We don't talk about Metal Gear: Survive.

    No.

    Conclusion

For a combination of the best and most convenient experience, requiring only that you have a PS3 OF ANY KIND:

    PS1 copy/PSN download of MGS1

MGS HD Collection for 2, 3, and Peace Walker

MGS4 is only available on PS3

GZ and V are also available on PS3 and play just fine there, but I strongly recommend playing the 8th gen/PC version.

MGS PO and MGR are awesome but you don't need to play them.

And you're all set. Remember to play in release order and enjoy.

MGSV Mission 13: Pitch Dark "exfiltrate the hot zone before..." is driving me mad

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 11:06 AM PST

I cannot for the life of me complete MGSV Mission 13's optional objective: "Exfiltrate the hot zone before Mfinda Oilfield is sealed off".

I've tried it a few different ways, but my last attempt I used Quiet and killed everyone in the Oilfield (I got the "outpost captured, +300 heroism" notification). I pressed the button to turn off the thing, planted C4 on the tank, hopped in the chopper in the middle of the facility and blew the C4 as we were flying away. The cutscene played and I was teleported back into the base. 🙄 So I immediately sprinted to the nearest shipping container and wormhole fultoned myself out on top of it, but I STILL didn't complete the optional objective!! Wth am I supposed to do?

Why in mgs iv snake isnt “smoking”his cigs?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 01:38 PM PST

It always annoyed me how he waves them around holds them in his mouth but there's no smoke coming out of them or him exhaling/inhaling the smoke. I know its a stupid little detail but it always bothers me each time i see it. Is it like that because he doesn't want to harm otacon/sunny but at the same time in the intro sequence he just holds a cig in his mouth like wtf snake you are supposed to light it up. I don't maybe he likes to suck the tobacco through the filter idk

Can't go in to Paz and Emmerich's rooms in mother base

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 06:18 AM PST

In mother base, when you completed a target practivce in any platform, the game won't trigger a checkpoint. So I did some searching and then I found out that you can trigger a checkpoint by entering Paz's room in the medical platform and Emmerich's in the R&D platform. I tried doing this in Paz's room and it actually worked.

Before I did the mission where you meet Emmerich, I already found Paz's room and watched the secret cutscene. I know you can't go into this room again after you give Paz 10 memento photos, but I only gave her one.

A few days later, after I finished the mission where you meet Emmerich (Episode 12: Hellbound iirc) Miller told me in the radio Huey is working in the R&D platform. I already know this since the beginning of the game, and I wanted to immediately go there. I fond the door with Emmerich's face and I tried to open it and it won't open. The light above the door is also red.

I played a few main missions after that, but when I return I still can't go in.

Then I tried to go to Paz's room in the medical platform. I can't get in too and the light above the door is red. I only gave her one photo so I don't think it's because I completed the memento photos quest.

Solutions? I don't want to repeat target practices when I die in mother base. Or maybe there's another way to trigger a checkpoint in mother base?
