Why is this fanbase so negative about the prospect of new games or entries that do not involve Kojima

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 11:29 AM PDT

It kind of drives me crazy. Not all of the Metal Gear spin-offs or entries not involving Kojima have been bad, but half this fanbase acts like they want to boycott anything new that might be created except basically straight ports or touch-ups of the existing games. I think most of those people would end up buying the games anyway, but still the negativity around any potential announcements is just strange to me. This isn't meant to be a "let people enjoy things" post - I love to critique, but this hypothetical content isn't even out or even described yet. Kojima has good and bad tendencies, his work wasn't perfect. People love to gripe about MGS4's story and praise Ghost Babel yet lately the attitude is that Kojima is the only one who could ever do it, accept no substitutes.

Likewise the big MGS twitter accounts I follow get themselves all worked up and upset any time there is a MGS rumor - seemingly simultaneously confident that no rumor will ever be true, yet also militant in shutting them down and dragging anyone who partakes. They almost seem to take it personally that someone would suggest new content is coming. It seems to ruin their days. It's a really weird phenomenon.

So what if new or remade Metal Gear games turn out to be bad? It doesn't take away from what already exists. Maybe they'll be good! But if not, we can all continue to gatekeep and insist everyone play the originals - whatever. Also, I think Kojima is worshipped as an auteur to a kind of silly degree around here. He's the mastermind and god bless him for it, but he's not infallible and other artists could create within his universe and maybe do some things better IMO.

I don't believe the MGS3 rumour, but if it IS true - what would you want changed about the game?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 11:03 AM PDT

We can debate the validity of the rumours all day long - I personally can't see it happening.

But instead, let's talk about a hypothetical MGS3 remake. Now, I know for a lot of you it's your favourite MGS game. But in this situation, is there anything you'd want changed? Any improvements this could be an opportunity to implement?

For myself, and I know you're going to hate me for saying it, I think the Cobra Unit needs some work. They should feel like actual characters. The Pain, especially, is a real wasted opportunity. A soldier who controls insects should be terrifying. Yet he looks silly, dances and has no personality to speak of. I'd be absolutely fine with rebuilding some of these bosses from the ground up.

But what about you? Any changes you'd want to see? Or do you want a straight up remake with absolutely no story/gameplay alterations whatsoever?

What is the Definitive Metal Gear Game?

I chose games that Kojima was primarily involved in, whether it's directing or writing

Recently beat Sons of Liberty for the first time and I've got to say... (SPOILERS)

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 07:50 AM PDT

I think Raiden is a better protagonist than Snake (any Snake). I don't think he's necessarily the better character, because let's face it Snake is way cooler, but as a protagonist he's excellent.

I really loved the themes of existentialism and free will in MGS2, especially in the third act. Raiden is the better character for a moment like that because he doesn't have as much of an established character at that point. By MGS2 Snake knows who he is and what he wants, that moment at the end of the game where the game makes Raiden (and by extension the player) question free will just wouldn't work with Snake.

I also like that throughout MGS2, Snake is just going around and doing his own thing and neither Raiden nor the Player know what he's really up to. There are moments where you genuinely don't know if Snake is on our side and I think that's awesome. Taking this character we know and love and making us wonder if he might end up being a villain.

That's my two cents. I know that at least initially many people were disappointed that Raiden was the protagonist of MGS2 instead of Snake, but I think Raiden is what really makes that game great.

Why was Outer Heaven built in South Africa

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 10:12 AM PDT

I mean for MSF and DD they both got gifted free ocean platforms and they took because why not and

Zanzibar Land was built and in Tselinoyarks because Jack remembered how good the location was, high up in the mountains and a mishmash of different environments, swamps, deserts, forests and also probably because he wanted to stay close to where he killed The Boss

But why was Outer Heaven built in South Africa, all we know about the surrounding area is that it's a desert but a desert is hardly a strategic place to build a gigantic fortress

Playing the original Metal Gear for the first time. Any tips? And two little questions... what tanks are these and why they are in a sewer?

I have a bad feeling about this… but then again it’s says it’s an MGS3 remake so there is hope…
