Thoughts of a newcomer on the MGS Series

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 12:35 PM PST

I recently played most of the Metal Gear games and here are my thoughts of a person that previously never came into contact with any of the games, prior to this year.

Please excuse my language mistakes as my native language is not English.

The Metal Gear Solid games are games that hold up very well to this day and I would say that about every single game I played, whether I ultimately liked it or not.

I played the games MGS2, MGS3, MGS1, MGS Peace Walker, MGS Ground Zeroes, MGS Phantom Pain (just starting), in this order.

As I already said, I think the games hold up well but I have my fair share of problems with some of them.

If you don't want to read the whole text just look skim the reviews.

    MGS2:

The game I started with and oh boy was it a ride of mixed feelings and emotions.

I started playing the game and found the controls to be weird at first and somewhat unintuitive but because I messed up to save several times I had to play the tanker mission with Snake 4 times.

This allowed me to get a grip with the controls and mechanics of the game and overall it helped me start the game with knowledge of how it fundamentally works.

Contrary to other people I had no opinion of Snake or Raiden, I knew that Solid Snake was one of the main protagonist of the Metal Gear Series but I couldn't really care less if I'd play with him or with Raiden.

I thought the ending of this game was an absolute 10/10, I never saw such a thoughtful conversation (between Campbell and Raiden) in a video game in my life and I also don't think that it is surpassed by any other conversation in the series.

That being said, I think the whole build-up to it was extremely bad.

The story starts very strong with Snake and is very interesting but then it comes to Raiden and it just kind of slows down.

This isn't really a problem in itself but I think in general the game has extrem pacing issues.

You play for 30 minutes and then there comes a cutscene with so much exposition it is hardly tolerable and then you exit the door to start another cutscene (just after the President kills himself).

This should've been handled much, much better and really hampered my enjoyment with the game.

Additionally the level designs was just monotone.

I also don't think that the Rose plotline was very interesting. Rose was extremely annoying and sometimes if I just want to save to take a break she would start talking for 5 minutes, which was annoying.

I don't think I really have to explain this, running from strut to strut just wasn't interesting.

My last gripe: When you get discovered by enemy soldiers there weren't many places to hide and run like in MGS3.

In MGS3 you could crawl under objects, hide in bushes, go into a room to hide etc. I think there were just more ways to get rid of them.

(6/10) – Slightly above average. Great game but dragged down by some issues.

    MGS3

    An absolutely phenomenal game.

The story was really easy to follow, amazing intro, the gameplay was excellent, the fixed camera was much better handled then in MGS 2, the healing system was amazing and blew my mind, boss fights impressed me very much (especially the Sorrow and the Flamethrower guy), very interesting ideas such as killing Raikov to steal his clothes and disguise yourself as him, really liked these tasks.

The cutscenes were EXTREMELY funny and the appearance of the Sorrow in the cutscenes was just straight-up genius (for example in the brilliant torture scene of Big Boss).

Good level variety as well. Even though it was mostly in the jungle, there were missions outside of guarded facilities, some small houses you could enter, the area in which you "fight" against the Sorrow.

I don't even know what to say about the game that hasn't already been said but I think this game is a masterpiece.

    (10/10)

    MGS1

I think the level design and positioning of the enemies is much better then it was in MGS2 and is therefore less frustrating.

Pacing was really good with the exception of the backtracking.

I think the backtracking was poorly done.

Compared to my favorite game of all time (Devil May Cry 3) which also was criticized for it's backtracking, this is handled even worse.

When backtracking in DMC3 you can see how something that happened in the story has affected the entire layout of the areas you previously were in.

In this game there is almost nothing like that.

Running back into the freezing room and then into that fire room just to change your key card and then running all the way back was annoying. They didn't even change the enemies that were in these areas! (I think at least, can't remember exactly).

Anyways, this could be because of technical limitations but I think that they could have at least build some shortcuts to the area or something.

The bosses on the other hand were really good and the humour more so.

I loved the line in which Snake asks why the music suddenly turned off or when Otacon asks why the music is so weird.

The boss fights were also really good, like the famous Mantis fight and I also really liked to fight against Gray Fox.

One last thing that also elevates this game for me above Metal Gear Solid 2 is the personal drama.

I just feel much more attached to the story and it's characters if I can see some drama and I think the death of Gray Fox / betrayal (impersonation) of Miller / saving Meryl just made the story really intense.

The only personal drama there really is in MGS 2 is the one between Raiden and Rose which seemed really forced and badly written (imo) and that Raiden was controlled his whole life.

    (8/10)

    Metal Gear Peace Walker

Let me start with the graphics of this game.

I think every game in this series has graphics that are in some way charming, even MGS1 but damn I feel like PW tried to have the graphics of a PS3 game, which were heavily downscaled to below PS2 graphics.

The texture seemed REALLY washed out some times and the character animation and face of Big Boss was just laughable.

Hardware limitation, I know, but even MGS1 looked better imo.

Just to cut it short because I notice that my text is becoming too long.

The theme of the story is amazing, suffers under the episodic feel of the game.

While the theme was amazing, I thought there really wasn't any personal drama that hooked me.

I couldn't get invested as much in the story with the A.I. Boss and I can't really explain why.

I actually LIKED the comic-cutscenes and thought it was clever to compensate for the hardware limitations of the PSP.

Characters that were introduced were cool but I really disliked loli Paz at the end.

The mission "date with Paz" was out of place in my opinion and several discussions I saw tried to excuse this as a joke, non-cannon and that it is allowed to have sex with a minor in some countries.

In some countries it is also allowed to marry children. This isn't an excuse.

I know Paz is not a minor but Big Boss THOUGHT she is and that kind of rubs me the wrong way.

That being said I try this opinion of mine to not interfere with the actual score of the game, it is just something I had to get off my chest.

Boss Battles were really poor and seemed like bullet sponges to me, seemed like it was designed around coop.

Mother Base was an excellent decision that perfectly led to Ground Zeroes.

Missions were smaller but the controls definitely improved on the controls of Snake Eater.

I liked the level designs more in MGS1 and 3, I love to go into separate rooms, take out cameras and get some items etc.

In this game you always run through a jungle it seems like.

Honestly I am rambling on about this game but there is something that just didn't quite catch me and it was hard for me to finish, I am sorry I can't put it into better words.

    (4/10)

    MGS GZ

Very short but I got it for 5$ in a bundle with TPP so I didn't really mind.

I was done with the main mission in about 50 minutes.

I played this game in 2020 on my Ps4 Pro and the graphics are breath-taking coupled with the smooth 60fps, amazing work by the FOX Engine.

The best intro I ever saw in a video game, with the perfect character introduction of Big Boss.

One of the most blood-pumping endings in a videogame I ever saw.

The story was basically done in under 2 hours but these 2 hours were just sooooooo intense.

    Many nice gameplay additions.

Binoculars are useful for the first time, switching between first person and 3rd person aiming feels perfect, the animations are very good, the options to interrogate enemies is clever.

The atmosphere of that dark, rainy, facility was perfect.

All in all this feels like Metal Gear Solid perfected when it comes to gameplay but I wish this game would have had some super-natural boss battles like the previous games.

I also noticed that this game is MUCH MORE serious then the other ones were and I am all up for it.

The scene in which the Medic searches for the bomb in Paz's guts were just disgusting and hard to watch but it fit's excellently with the atmosphere they set.

(9/10) – if I would consider the full price of this game it would be a (6/10)

All in all I think this ranking is highly unpopular in this subreddit as many people like MGS2 the most.

I just think that Kojima had to be more concise with his story and not just dump exposition after exposition on the player.

This doesn't give me the time to realise what I just saw and some important parts get lost by the player, this is why it is crucial to be concise and space out your exposition.

It also heightens the impact of some exposition if it isn't in the middle of a 30 minute cutscene.

I have to admit that sometimes I just got lost in the story and really had to think about all of the stuff the president just told me.

All of this could just be because it was my first Metal Gear Solid Game and I just wasn't used to the structure but then again I think MGS1 didn't have the problem.

Will definitely come back to this game at some point to see if my opinion has changed.

Also did I understand it right that Otacon was together with EE's mother or did I just misheard something?

Where the hell did that come from and why is it important to the story?

Anyways, these are my thoughts on these games, I hope we can discuss these games peacefully.

Regarding the bodies of deceased characters.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 11:46 AM PST

I always wondered what happened to the bodies of deceased characters? Were they removed off-screen or completely obliterated?

Example: Sniper Wolf's body was never found since MGS1. No skeletal remains whatsoever was found in MGS4.

Here's the list of deceased characters whose bodies were never recovered -

    • Sniper Wolf

    • The DARPA Chief

    • Kenneth Baker

    • Emma

    • Fortune

    • President James Johnson

    • Richard Ames

    • Vamp

    • Olga

    • The Boss (?)

    • Naomi Hunter

    • The Beauty and the Beast Unit

    • Hot Coldman (?)

    • Skullface

    • Chico

    • Revolver Ocelot

    Theorize or speculate away.

Bonus question: Were Big Boss and Solid Snake cremated or buried in a cemetery after the events of MGS4?

Metal Gear Solid Phantom Limbs or something...?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 11:26 AM PST

Not really a massive gamer but when I was younger I loved the metal gear solid game for PlayStation 1 (I think) have just been gifted a PS now pass for Christmas by my brother in law, which is awesome because I never knew Netflix for PS games existed!, my question is, is it any good? I like games like Hitman, slow stealth games where you have to think about what you're doing and don't really get on with COD style frantic kill everything that moves. Also, is there anything I should play before hand that's available on PS now? Having kids threw me out of the gaming loop so I'm not really up to speed on it all anymore.

    I think MGS2 is better than 3

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 10:45 AM PST

I don't know why but for some reason i always found 2 to be more fun, especially the tanker chapter. Also while I love the story of The Boss and Naked Snake, I feel that it would not have existed if it were not for MGS2 introducing the players to the patriots. I feel like 2 might be one of the most important games of the series. If you disagree, please tell me why.

Just got MGSV... But should I play it yet?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 10:12 PM PST

So, I know I'm a little late to the Metal Gear Solid party. I saw the definitive version on sale and thought to myself that now would be a great time to start playing a game that looks really cool and is also created by a person who's later work I enjoyed. Now that I've got it, I'm kinda stuck on whether I should play the other games or not. I feel like I could be missing out on a really cool back story from what I've heard, but that would involve having to purchase a whole new console, so I thought I'd just ask the veterans of the game on whether it's worth it having some added weight to the game? Or if I should just jump on in?
