The Most Misunderstood Plot Point of Metal Gear

Metal Gear fans are a really smart bunch, but there is one thing that is always misunderstood. The biggest misconception in Metal Gear relates to the character of Liquid Ocelot. Despite being the final villain of the series and Solid Snake's most dangerous foe, he often confuses people. The problem is that many fans believe Liquid Ocelot was simply Revolver Ocelot pretending to be possessed by Liquid Snake throughout the series. I'm here to tell you that the possessions were all genuine, both in MGS2 and MGS4.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

Liquid Snake was very noticeably possessing Revolver Ocelot in MGS2. The biggest piece of evidence supporting this is from Big Boss himself at MGS4's end. Big Boss says that Ocelot transformed himself into Liquid's doppelganger AFTER GW was affected by Emma's worm cluster in MGS2. GW was vulnerable in MGS2, which gave the Anti-Patriots a clear path to JD through GW. In the period after 2009 but before 2014, EVA retrieved and restored Big Boss's body while Ocelot implanted Liquid onto himself in attempts to destroy JD and retrieve Big Boss. Another piece of evidence supporting Liquid's possession is the fact that Ocelot removed Liquid's arm after the Big Shell incident. Why would Revolver Ocelot cut off his own arm if it wasn't affecting him? If Ocelot was truly just pretending, cutting off Liquid's arm is the last thing he would want to do. Here it was what truly happened to Revolver Ocelot and Liquid Snake during the 2005-2009 period. After Grayfox cut off Ocelot's arm, he lost his gunslinger potential as he became noticeably uncoordinated when handling his SAA.

Revolver Ocelot's losses coordination without his arm, dropping his own gun

To maintain his reputation as a dangerous gunman, Ocelot was given a second arm.

Liquid Ocelot speaking about the origins of the transplant surgery

Solidus Snake had given Ocelot a transplant surgery in France, giving the Ocelot the gift of Liquid Snake's arm. With the arm, Revolver Ocelot regained his sharpshooter proficiency but it came at price. Due to Ocelot's heritage, the arm acted as a conduit in which Liquid Snake's spirit could return to the world of the living. Ocelot's father, the Sorrow, was a spiritual medium who could invoke the spirits of the dead so Ocelot inherited some of that. This means that Liquid Snake's spirit could attempt to suppress Ocelot's will and take over the body for himself, giving him another chance to enact revenge on Big Boss, Zero, and Solid Snake. Despite this, Ocelot's spiritual ability was too strong for Liquid to overcome so Liquid rarely took over.

The Sorrow, the source of Ocelot's spiritual talent through his genes

The only times in which Liquid could consistently take over Ocelot was when Solid Snake was nearby, such as during the Tanker Incident. When Liquid first took over during the Tanker, Ocelot quickly regained control and simply brushed it off. Ocelot never considered Liquid to be a threat to him, it was too infrequent and weak for Ocelot to truly care. Using Ocelot's uncaring attitude to his advantage, Liquid managed his brief times of control very well and meticulously planned a way to overcome Ocelot's will. Liquid had managed to leak Arsenal Gear data to Otacon and Snake, luring them onto Big Shell. With Snake's presence on Big Shell, Liquid's spirit gained considerable strength. This all came to head at MGS2's climax on Arsenal Gear's rectum. Liquid finally pushed down Ocelot's will and divulged his manipulations, also revealing that he changed the navigation system of Arsenal Gear. To ensure the deaths of Solidus Snake, Solid Snake, and to create a mass terrorist event to distract the Patriots, Liquid sent Arsenal on a collision course into Manhattan. As Arsenal Gear went surfing towards destruction, Liquid hijacked Metal Gear Ray and proclaimed that he would kill the Patriots. He loudly exclaimed that he actually saw Ocelot interact with the Patriots and now knew their location, putting everything Ocelot worked for in danger. He invited Solid Snake to a chase as he jumped off Arsenal, Snake could not keep with Ray however. Shortly after, Ocelot regained control of his body. Now fully seeing the true threat Liquid posed to his plans, Ocelot amputated the arm and cut off Liquid's connection to this world. Despite the amputation of Liquid's arm, this would not be the end of his tale...

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Although some people understand the legitimacy of the Liquid possessions in MGS2, the possessions in MGS4 are usually seen as completely fabricated by nearly the entire fanbase. The main evidence people point to when they claim MGS4 Liquid Ocelot was a sham is Big Boss' speech. Although Big Boss' speech mentions hypnosis, nanomachines, drugs, etc...there is something interesting about it. The methods used to create MGS4 Liquid Ocelot are nearly the exact same as the methods used to create Screaming Mantis.

A quote summarizing Psycho Mantis' return, sharing similar wording to Liquid's return

Drebin reveals that Psycho Mantis's spirit was placed into Screaming Mantis by hypnosis, psychotherapy, nanomachines, and drugs. Screaming Mantis' placement as the boss right before Liquid Ocelot is a form of foreshadowing regarding the new way Liquid's spirit returned. MGS4's novelization goes into more detail about Revolver Ocelot's hypnosis process, bringing more parallels to Screaming Mantis. It reveals that Revolver Ocelot suppressed his own will with nanomachines to further the process, in a similar fashion to the way that the BB unit would have their wills suppressed to make Psycho Mantis' control stronger. There was another piece of evidence supporting Liquid's return in MGS4. As we know in the Metal Gear universe, becoming a doppelganger of a deceased person leads to that deceased spirit returning from the grave. This was shown twice in the series with the possession of Screaming Mantis and the possession of Peace Walker. Both scenarios involve someone turning into a mental doppelganger of a dead person, and both lead to the dead person possessing the doppelganger. Screaming Mantis replicated Psycho Mantis, and after her will was suppressed by nanomachines, she became entirely under the will of Psycho Mantis's ghost. Peace Walker replicated The Boss, and after it's will was handicapped by Big Boss, it became entirely under the will of the Boss' ghost.

Dr.Strangelove's quote after witnessing Peace Walker's possession

In a similar fashion, Revolver Ocelot replicated Liquid Snake, and after his will was suppressed by nanomachines, Liquid's ghost took over. It's now time to describe the full list of events depicted in Liquid's second possession. Following the loss of Liquid's arm, Ocelot gained a cybernetic and recognized the usefulness of Liquid Snake. Revolver Ocelot felt like Liquid's plan for eliminating the Patriots would succeed where others failed, finally bringing an end to JD and Zero. Ocelot decided to throw away his own life if it meant that Big Boss could return. Revolver Ocelot underwent hypnosis procedures and other processes, bringing Liquid Snake back from the dead. Liquid Snake however, was unaware of what truly happened, he simply believed Ocelot became weak and unable to fight off possessions just like the rest of the world did. Liquid did not know the truth that Ocelot was simply using him to resurrect the man he hated most, Big Boss. With Liquid Snake believing he was finally in control, he planned his insurrection. By his side was Naomi Hunter, an agent of Ocelot for monitoring Liquid. One of Liquid's early goals was resurrecting Psycho Mantis, unknowingly using the same method Ocelot used to resurrect him.

Psycho Mantis, Liquid's closest ally, released from the grave

With Naomi, Vamp, and Psycho Mantis, Liquid set up an intricate web of PMCs to serve as his personal army. He set up a mother company where he was CEO, Outer Heaven. Outer Heaven and it's operatives began their insurrection in 2014 with a two part plan. One of his plans was that he uses Solid Snake to infect the Patriots with FoxAlive, and then personally kills Snake. If Solid Snake died before reaching GW, he would use Rex's cannon to destroy JD and take over the Patriots with the intent to make them kill themselves. Both plans involve the death of the Patriots, which fell in line with Revolver Ocelot's goals. Other than a few mishap, like shooting and killing EVA, Liquid generally did exactly what the Anti-Patriots planned for him to do. The pieces fell into play when Liquid uploaded FoxAlive and killed the Patriots, freeing Big Boss and achieving Ocelot's goal. With the Patriots dead, Liquid set his sights on Solid Snake and fought a final battle in hand to hand combat. As the two brothers fought, Liquid Snake began slowly losing his hold on Ocelot as Ocelot's body weakened. Throughout the battle, Liquid begins cracking and Ocelot starts to show. Once Solid Snake throws his final punch at Liquid on Outer Haven, Liquid is fully expelled from Ocelot in every way. With Liquid gone, Ocelot dies alone from the new FoxDie strain in Solid Snake's blood.

    Conclusion

Liquid Ocelot is not simply Revolver Ocelot pretending to be Liquid Snake, he is the personification of their conflict. In MGS2, Liquid hides within Ocelot while executing his own scheme in secret. In MGS4, Ocelot hides within Liquid while executing his own scheme in secret. Liquid Snake's presence does not end in MGS1. Although his genes died out, his memes live on through his soul. Liquid Snake is always present to challenge Solid Snake, either genetically or memetically. Liquid and the Patriots are the main villains of the Solid Snake series.. Just as Big Boss and Zero corrupted the will of the Boss, Liquid and Patriots corrupted the will of Big Boss and Zero. The war between Big Boss and Zero was also passed onto their "children" in a more corrupted form. The Metal Gear Solid universe was trapped in a series of endless cycles on repeat with everything corrupting as it passed from one generation to the generation. The sins of the past also leaked into the present and poisoned the world. Liquid and the Patriots are the peak of that corruption, they are the final step in the grim evolution. Liquid used Revolver Ocelot in MGS2 and in turn, Revolver Ocelot used him. Despite killing the Patriots, Liquid died without realizing he gave Big Boss, the man he despised, a new life. Liquid's entire goal was surpassing and destroying Big Boss's legacy and in the end, he was manipulated into making Big Boss more real than ever. Liquid died in vain, but so did Revolver Ocelot. Ocelot died with a smile, he believed Big Boss had finally returned to make Outer Heaven a reality onto a world without the Patriots. Sadly for Ocelot, that wasn't the cause. Rather than starting a new war and continuing the endless cycle of war and fighting, Big Boss chose to speak to Solid Snake. Despite knowing that speaking to Solid Snake would kill him, Big Boss used his new chance at life to heal rather than to hurt. Instead of molding the world in a place of war and death like Ocelot wanted, Big Boss returned everything to zero and told Snake to end the cycle of pain. Liquid Snake and Revolver Ocelot manipulated each other and both wasted their lives trapped within a system of war, they were two sides of the same coin. The coin that the two shared...was called Liquid Ocelot.

Which MGS future scenario frightens you the most?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2020 08:57 AM PST

Since MGS2 came pretty close to how things have actually happened in sight of public data control, what scenario would frighten you the most in case of another „Kojima prophecy" happening? I excluded parts of the series that take place in the „past".

An MGS 4 question about nanomachines, son!

    Posted: 25 Nov 2020 08:57 AM PST

Rewatching the ChipCheezum MGS 4 Let's Play- after the first frog fight Meryl says the nanomachines let her and her team share senses, which let's them to a sick AF action movie squad maneuver. So how is she surprised at the end of the game when she learns Johnny doesn't have any nanos?

Shouldn't she have been aware she couldn't get any of that info from Johnny, not to mention all of the various obvious deficiencies he has that the nanos are supposed to mitigate?
