Metal Gear Solid 1 PS1 (Review)

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 03:27 PM PDT

I just recently got into the Metal Gear Solid games and got the first MGS trilogy off of eBay. I just finished MGS 1 and I have my complete thoughts ready for this post. I have just started playing MGS2 for the first time, so I will have that review posted shortly. In the meantime let's take a look at the game that launched the series Metal Gear Solid for the PS1. Story: The story of Metal Gear Solid is simple right until the very end. You are Snake a former soldier for Fox Hound who is sent to Shadow Moses by the U.S. government. (I am summarizing the story off the top of my head, so please excuse me if I get something wrong.) You arrive at Shadow Moses which is in Alaska, and your primary goal is to stop a nuke from launching. You try to find the DARPA Chief and get answers about the nuke. Once you find the DARPA Chief or Decoy Octopus he tells you information about it, and you find out Metal Gear is launching the nuke. Then he has a heart attack caused by Fox Die that you later find out that you're injected with the virus, but I'll get to that in a moment. So he tries to find Metal Gear so he can destroy it. And you find the President Baker of Arms Chief, and before you free him Revolver Ocelot steals the show and you enter a boss fight, once you finish he gets his hand cut off by Frank Jaeger a soldier that Snake fought and died in Zanzibar. Frank was friends and enemies with Solid Snake on the battlefield. He was a subject of testing by scientist and was brought back to life and he became a ninja. After the boss battle you talk to President Baker and he tells you more about Metal Gear and how to stop it. He then says to meet Hal Emmerich or Ottacon in a lab because he was the main designer and knows how to stop it. President Baker has a heart attack which was caused by Fox Die, same with Decoy Octopus. You go to the lab, and you find Ottacon. You then go into a battle with Frank just like in Zanzibar because Frank wanted a rematch one last time. You win and Frank leaves. Hal tells you to go to Metal Gear with the keys President Baker gave you to shut down the launch. You go to Metal Gear and shut down the launch, but oh wait you accidentally started the launch and you then have to fight Liquid, your twin brother who got the recessive genes, who is operating Metal Gear, and you kill him, and there are multiple endings depending on what you did in the game. I got the Ottacon ending. That was the most basic summary you could game like this. I'm sorry I will get more in depth later in this review. Side Characters: Oh Jesus I don't think I was ready for this review.

Meryl: A love interest for Snake, she always admired you when she was a wannabe soldier, she then realizes when she gets shot down by Sniper Wolf she thinks war is truly awful and realized she never wanted to be a soldier and she was just doing it to be closer to her Dad or Uncle who died in the battlefield. Basically the message. Colonel: Friends with Snake but a big ol' liar. If he didn't lie as much there would only be the Meryl ending, and wouldn't her "niece" killed. Anyways he's pretty cool. Naomi: The most interesting character. Naomi is the science gene expert. She is a "spy," but actually she just bought her identity because she has no family or background. Her parents were killed by Frank Jaeger and couldn't bring himself to kill a little girl that was Naomi. Frank raised her as her "big brother" and never knew who her parents were. Frank later tells Snake before he dies to tell Naomi what I just said and of course, Snake is a little softie so he doesn't. Mei Ling: The person that saves your game, and a person that wanted to be in the Air Force but didn't like the violence and killing, so she made the radar for soldiers to use. Basically any girl in Metal Gear Solid Snake flirts with. Master/Liquid: Snake's Master, or is he...? Master is a dead corpse in his home, but Liquid is tricking Snake into thinking that he is Master. He is the first one to suspect that Naomi is a spy, and gets her arrested even though SHE ISN'T. Liquid and Solid Snake are identical clones from Big Boss. Snake gets the dominant traits, aka the best traits, and Liquid gets the recessive traits, aka the crappy McDonald's Happy Meal toy traits. Liquid wanted revenge on Big Boss, but Snake killed him so Liquid wants to kill Snake. Frank: I already explained himself twice. Natasha: A nuclear warhead fanatic, she is really not important to the game at all. Tell me if I'm forgetting any IMPORTANT characters. Bosses: Raven: Super annoying piece of crap. Especially the second time you play against him. He is a big boy that was recommended by Revolver Ocelot to join Fox Hound. He might have a sexual relationship with Ravens. Sniper Wolf: A really easy boss, who is the best sniper in the world, and Ottacon has a weird crush on her and acts like she likes him too. She really likes dogs. Psycho Mantis: Probably the best, most innovative boss, but why did you have to plug your controller into the second controller port, it would've been a much better idea to take out your memory card. He massacred his village and is a Sociopath, no wait a PSYCHOpath. Revolver Ocelot: A very important character in the later games, not much in this game. He is very easy but very cryptic to get to him. Shoot shoot bang bang. Hind: Very fun battle, you have to pay close attention when Liquid is descending and rising back up. Not very hard but it is a bitch going up the stairs. Metal Gear/Liquid: Metal Gear is challenging and Liquid is easy if you know what playing against Frank feels like. Speaking of Frank he turns into Franks Hot Dogs by Metal Gear. He is just blood on Metal Gear's foot. Frank Jaeger: Fun and a little challenging, real men fight with their bare hands BTW. Frank must have really liked Zanzibar because he has an orgasm every time Snake pitches him. Gameplay: Honestly not that bad for boss battles, but what the hell, this should be a stealth game for most of it, half of the game is just boss battles. Very easy control wise. And if you want to get into the series press circle for okay. That tip will really come in handy. X is to crouch and crawl. Triangle is to go into first-person. Square is to shoot, grab, throw. Tap square repeatedly without any weapons to a guard and get that sensation of snapping his neck. I am not a psychopath it just feels really good when you do it. Circle is to punch and operate elevators, and buttons. Level Design: Good, except for those damn stairs. I hate those damn stairs, and it is so cryptic at times, and there is so much damn backtracking you will be so overwhelmed. This game forces you to use a walkthrough. Ending: You might get the Ottacon ending like me, or the Meryl ending which has Meryl wake up from being 360 no-scoped by Sniper Wolf three times. I think the Ottacon ending is better because it shows Snake deal with death in a serious way for the first time. He couldn't save Meryl and that is something he can't get over. Before this he was a stone cold mercenary badass, but it shows his soft side. Verdict: I can't even cover everything I should've in this review because this damn game is so long. I love the codec system but couldn't talk about it. This game is a PlayStation masterpiece so you should play MGS Twin Snakes only for the Nintendo GameCube. Sorry, but the GameCube version is better in every way. I haven't played it yet, but I've heard it was amazing. Play either version it doesn't matter, I give this game a 9/10 Play it please.

Do you think Venom Snake existence was necessary for MGSV and the MG timeline?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 07:59 AM PDT

After all, even before V, Big Boss resurrecting after MG1 already was explained as the project Snatcher. (a project that Madnar worked on and kept big boss alive, likely was supposed to be explored in the canceled MGSR since Madnar was in it)

Still Confused Over Inconsistencies in Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 12:33 AM PDT

This series is known to be convoluted. Which is totally okay and valid. Considering that it's been continuously worked on for over 30 years, it would be unusual if there weren't inconsistencies. Hell, Phantom Pain was written specifically to bridge the gap between the 2D era to where we are now. However, I'm still having issues comprehending what happened in MG1 and MG2. It's not so much how these games are related to the others, but the games themselves. What the heck is going on?

Why did Big Boss send Solid Snake to infiltrate Outer Heaven? From what I know, his mission was to rescue Gray Fox and discover the truth about Metal Gear, with the expectation to fail. General consensus says that this was supposed to be a ruse, removing attention from Outer Heaven and Zanzibar Land, but how? If Solid was supposed to die, wouldn't that just arouse more suspicion? It would just confirm that Outer Heaven is a belligerent organization, unless the world treats it like North Korea, where nobody wants to fire the first shot at it. Otherwise, that would encourage more retaliations and scrutiny. But also wasn't the entire world already aware that this military stronghold existed? Was the point just to disassociate it from Big Boss and get the heat off him? In interpretations saying that Big Boss sent Solid to give the impression that we was taking his role as FOXHOUND commander seriously, then wouldn't he have to continually keep sending men to infiltrate and die? Solid had to rescue Gray Fox, who was allegedly tasked with more or less the same mission. If in the case where Solid was only supposed to go as far to rescue Gray Fox, then why would Gray Fox say that Metal Gear is nuclear equipped? Was he actually working with Big Boss and Venom Snake, or was he there for the same reason Big Boss sent Snake, to be bait? If so, that reinforces my claim that Big Boss would just have to continually keep sending men over to die, until maybe the job is reassigned to a different unit. But if Gray Fox was just bait, then why did he join Big Boss in MG2? Would it be for similar reasons as Kyle Schneider being Black Ninja?

I guess you can technically say whatever due to the lack of details to be honest. I don't have many doubts regarding Venom Snake, since in my own personal head-canon Solid recognized that Venom Snake was not the real Big Boss, and that's what motivated him to infiltrate Zanzibar Land, suspecting the real Big Boss was involved.

Granted, all of this should be taken with a grain of salt. These games were not created with the intent to establish one of the longest continuous storylines in gaming. Sometimes, I feel that in the case of Metal Gear, the sum of its parts are actually greater than the whole. I feel like it's better not to focus on the big picture and instead appreciate the themes each game chooses to focus on. But I still think it's important that I get some sort of logical interpretation out of these games.

I am the only one a little "tired" of Big Boss?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 08:20 PM PDT

It's not i dislike the character. but i really think he became way too important as a protagonist. from 2008 to 2015, excluding spin off, he was the main protag of the franchise. (and yes, Venom count as BB)

Solid Snake never was playable again after MGS4 in an MG game. and Raiden only was in a (very good) spin off. and even then, Solid Snake had to wait 7 years to return between MGS2 and 4. Big Boss got MGS3, PO, then a small break in MGS4 (but he still appears in it and has a major role in the story), then PW and V.

So please, whoever is directing whatever is next for the franchise. use another character than big boss as the protagonist.

I think I'm stuck in Demon form...

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 07:34 AM PDT

About two weeks ago, I built my first nuke. I suffered the -50,000 Heroism but I felt good about my accomplishment, however, that same day, my FOB was raided and they extracted my nuke. To clear things up, I'm new to the game and still rank E, though I have all my defenses maxed out and I'm winning nearly every single defense I have. The guy who took my Nuke was an AAA+. What an asshole. Anyway, for these past two weeks, I've been trying to get my heroism back up to remove the Demon but it's not working. I currently have 468,000 Heroism, much higher than the 200ish thousand I had when I became Demon Snake. I've been doing lots of the reccomended activities but nothing's working. Any more exotic tips that aren't as common?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 10:26 PM PDT

Um... What the fuck is with these videos at the beginning? There was a weird gameshow, a fucked up cooking show, a "security monitoring system" that was a giant fucking metal mantis stabbing a dude, and some kind of James Bond tentacle porn.

    This is metal gear, right?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 06:54 PM PDT

I just finished MGS V for the second time, and as I was battling Sahelanthropus, I started to wonder: who had it tougher? Big Boss going up against the Shagohod, or Venom against Sahelanthropus? What do you all think?

    About offscreen events...

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 05:07 AM PDT

Hello, I've been a player of some of the games, likely, MG1-2 and MGS1-3. I recently have beaten Peace Walker and the fact that Paz cited Cipher on the ending(and I know it's something ellaborated only on MGSV) made me think about other events that never happen during the plot of the game, yet somehow everyone knows about it. For example, I'll mention two events: Les Enfants Terribles, and details like Dr. Clark doing the project or EVA being the surrogate mother; or the founding of the Patrios, with Zero and BB parting ways due to ideal conflicts. These two events happen between MGS3 and MGSPW, but it's never really explained in these games. Of course, I know about these things due to MG Wiki, but it's strange to see it there and not see how it really happened inside the game itself, unless it's something talked about only in MGSV, which would be strange since these concepts are in the franchise since the first and second MGS. Can someone enlighten me?
