I spent the last month playing HD collection, 1, and 4..

Long post, but after finishing the games back to back, I took some time to reflect on my thoughts about everything and I just thought I'd share them here.

So, I've been into MG ever since the release of MGS1 on the PS. I actually got into it by playing the short demo that came on a sample disc from Pizza Hut way back in the day. If I remember correctly, you only get up to meeting Decoy Octopus until that scene plays out and the demo ends. Ever since then, I was hooked, and throughout the years, I tried my best to play all the main releases (never played PO, AC!D, and barely touched VR). Becoming enwrapped in the lore, I eventually fell in love with the series, and after many failed attempts to play all the main games back to back, I took the last month to play them all chronologically, which I know is an unpopular way of going about it, but I like to think I'm aware enough of what's going on that it wouldn't bother me one bit, and I actually enjoyed playing it this way very much.

Simply put, this series is a masterpiece. I'm not saying anything that no one here doesn't already know, as we're all on this sub for a reason. The story of a simple man doing what he's ordered to do for the love of his country, only to realise that nothing is truly what it seems, the inner struggles to figure out what he's truly fighting for, and the events that shape him into who he becomes pulls at so many heart strings that I wasn't sure I could handle the feels. As we detour away from Big Boss and follow the adventures of his clone, Solid, we're thrown into even more absurd and crazy missions that really humanise someone who was literally created for the sole purpose of battling, eventually gaining his freedom and realising that there's more to life than what was outlined for him.

The cast, barring a few characters here and there, are some of the most creative and interesting of any game that I have ever played. Character development was truly at the forefront of the series, and you're really interested in what made these people who they are, their motives, almost as if you sympathise with their cause. What I especially like is how the events of the game coincide with real life events, almost giving credence to the series as if these events really happened, and the higher powers of our government did everything in their power to suppress them from us common folk. Every single game was a white knuckled journey to aid John, Jack, and David in saving the world from total chaos. You're so caught up in doing everything possible to prevent total global warfare that you feel you're right there with them, sacrificing everything in hopes of keeping peace around the world. When all is said and done, you let out a sigh of relief knowing that you can rest easy, for now.

Even so, the inner battles continue. Trying to come to terms with why they've really been put on this planet, each character is plauged with thoughts of doubt and grief. They all want to do the right thing, but at what cost? What sacrifices must be made for the greater good? Do they really know what the greater good really is? Seemingly, no matter what the outcome is, we're always left unsure of what really transpired. From killing The Boss and preventing an all out nuclear war between two powerhouse countries to completely tearing down a powerful AI system that could've controlled all people on earth and sent the world into an endless spiral of war, we see our (anti) heroes evolve, and we grow and evolve with them. We learn what it is to really sacrifice self for others, to put aside our problems and join together to fight for what's right, and to see the world for what it truly is, through our own eyes.

Metal Gear Solid will always be my favourite game series, and this past month reminded me exactly what that is. If you made it this far into my rant, well, thank you for reading.

    Just discovered this series

I'll be honest after Death Stranding I thought Hideo Kojima was kind of an overhyped hack but after Metal Gear Solid 1 through 4... my god.

This series tells a beautiful story of a man spending his life fighting a never ending battle, growing old without ever finding true satisfaction, and in the end being left with nothing but grief and loss and god it's just so incredible.

I get it, I finally get it. Thankyou Kojima.
