If the Patriots' AI GW and JD had everything figured out for the S3 plan, how come they didn't consider the possibility of the President squealing the plan and the Patriots' existence to Raiden?

I'm planning to go through the entire series with the original games. Only ones I'm missing is Metal Gear and MGS4. Anyone know how to play these games? I don't have a PS3.

The ending to MGSV explained in one image

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 04:09 PM PST

Excessively long post from somebody who recently played through MGS1-GZ.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 05:50 PM PST

So, I was hyped for the release of Death Stranding. I had previous experience with Kojima playing a smaller than I remembered amount of MGS1 and fully playing MGS3 when I was younger, plus playing about half of TPP upon release 4 years ago. I knew Kojima's quirkiness was up my ally from a vague memory of those games and I was definitely right. The little fourth wall breaks, the way the characters can be goofy while in serious situations, the outside the box solutions, the somewhat convoluted yet deep and meaningful story that is conveyed through story and gameplay. It was the kind of game I would usually spend the next few weeks thinking about and unable to play anything else after completion, but instead of that I got the urge to go back and try out MGS1. At this point in time stealth was my biggest fear in games too. I was fucking terrible at it, and didnt believe I would make it through more than an hour of 1.

So, after spending the past 3 weeks going through the series I decided its about time to dump my experience on reddit, one by one. Take note I have read over PW since I have had slight experience with it and know its basically Metal Gear Monster Hunter, and after starting TPP I decided I need to take a break before Ill be ready for it due to its differences.

Bonus mini Snatcher section at the end, too.

    Metal Gear Solid

So, after debating whether to play the original or Twin Snakes I decided to myself It's best to play the original as intended. I was expecting a clunky by modern times experience with bad presentation but to my surprise it felt like it controlled pretty well, and had simple yet fun gameplay. The Voice acting was also a suprise to me, the voices were cheesy in a good way, and the voice acting could still be good when it needed to be. I Loved how small the map was, instead of pushing through lots of unoriginal hallways i liked going back to old areas to access now available ones. I also loved the kojima goofiness and the cast was pretty good. I think my biggest complaint would probably be the janky animations in cutscenes, but that goes for basically any PSX game. I also instantly fell in love with Otacon with him being a fucking weeb, little did I know he would end up becoming a core cast member too :3.

As for difficulty, I was initially intimidated by the game as I stated earlier but later realised the stealth is actually pretty simple, which makes sense for a top down PSX game. In the end I had more trouble with some of the action sequences later on, and more than that the god damn Metal Gear Rex fight.

I got the Meryl ending, but also watched the other online. By todays standards the game wasnt anything to absolutely blow me away, but I was hooked enough to play the entire game in one sitting and was really suprised by how much I enjoyed it, and the fact I knew it was just the start of an entire series (Lets pretend MG 1+2 were nothing but past mission files until I play them) had me super hyped for 2.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

To start, i knew about the raiden twist. I also knew "the game predicted shit", "clunky", "bad", "best game ever made". Judging by the divisive reception of Death Stranding I think I understood what the reception was like for 2 when it came out (Its a few months older than me), and since I loved DS I had a lot of hype waiting to get home and start MGS 2.

The first mission was fucking amazing. It looked gorgeous after coming straight from MGS and the controls were a thousand times smoother than it. I felt glad I played MGS 1 first as well, since the controls probably would have felt convoluted if I didnt get to know a simplified version of them first. It was all the stepping stones of a great sequel, with cast members returning and the rest still being mentioned, with an exciting opening which set up an awesome plot, with you sneaking in to snap photos to upload online...which turned out to be neat foreshadowing. The small room bite-sized stealth of the game felt a lot like Celeste in that once you get through a room you're safe from losing progress no matter how many times you fuck up too, which made me feel assured I could make it through the game despite it being much more detailed than MGS.

Anyway, after finishing the Tanker mission I was interested in meeting raiden...and yeah i could definitely see where the hate came from. He has a more normal life at home, his only experience being literally the same experience the player has, plus the way he slips over bird shit was neat to me. I liked him, rather than getting annoyed by the fact im playing as some lame rookie like Kojima seemed to intend, I ended up thinking "I can relate to that, awesome". Seeing the layout of big shell also made me go "fuck yeah". seeing the back tracking i liked in MGS evolve into a neatly structured set of interconnected rooms was sweet.

The game sort of fell apart from there though, during the whole bomb segment. Needing to manually activate the radar felt pretty annoying as someone who previously relied so much on it, and some bombs were annoying to find. It wasnt all terrible, I liked the introduction as Pliskin as a character, and I still liked raiden at least, but I kept pushing through the game after that. The game slowly got better from there, and the bosses in particular felt awesome.

I think the only other dip the game had was the Emma section, she moved at a snails pace and I could barely see where I was swimming while playing on a CRT. But after that the game went full on awesome. When the story started talking about the overflow of digital information my mind started being blown, as someone who grew alongside the internet as it became the behemoth it is today its crazy how just a few months before my birth someone could predict something so accurately. The way the game just kept on getting more and more crazy convoluted and how jack reflected exactly how you the player would too was so brilliant. Especially when the game just straight up broke the fourth wall, telling you turn off the game console, code breaking through the wall, snake outright stating he has infinite ammo, that was when I realised the game is a beautiful message on many things. The nature of a sequel, fan expectations, the then impending rise of the internet, it was amazing.

It has to be one of my favourite endings of all time too. Amid the chaos and frustration you, and raiden are told to decide for yourself what is real and what is not, and not to rely on others for it. The way raiden then quite literally threw away the control of the player (the dog tags with your name on it) was so great. It reminded me of the feeling I got after watching classics like Taxi Driver, wowed and amazed. the post credits call also had me excited to learn more about the story in its coming sequels.

Game also gets a +1 for having Metal gear skating included.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

This might upset a few people.

I had a memory of most of the boss fights and some scenes like the long ladder sequence, the field with the flowers, and the opening, but not too much else. I also remembered the survival mechanics which I enjoyed.

I was hyped as snake readied up to jump out into the Jungle, and was excited to start playing and learn more backstory. The setting was certainly cool and it was cool to see the series evolve into more open 3D enviroments, plus I was playing substance so I wouldnt have to worry about an annoying camera.

Gameplay-wise, I was not impressed. The levels were designed well, the camera was fine, but the game desperately needs a middle ground between standing up and crawling (which I know the 3DS version thankfully added). It was also super clunky. sometimes snake just wouldnt move when I moved the joystick, and i needed to reverse and adjust before attempting to move forward again. Snake would always stand up if I walked into little spikes of land that I couldnt make out at all and climbing ledges was a nightmare. At least I still did enjoy the survival segments with eating and patching myself up. I ended up just getting caught and using the shotgun to power through areas half the time, though I will say the areas where I didnt run into clunk issues were great. The bosses ranged from great like the end to terrible like the fury.

Story wise, it was pretty good. I liked Snake, I liked Para Medic,I liked Siginit, I liked Zero,I liked Ocelot I liked Eva. Didnt care for any of them as much as I did other characters in the series minus Snake and Eva. The Boss, she was kind of likeable but didnt feel like she had too much of a personality going for her. I didnt really care about the villain too much either. I did find the end of the game to be a trill ride. The big motor cycle sequence was super cool, and the whole story of what happened with The Boss was somewhat emotional despite me not caring for her too much. I think in the end I was just cheering for Snake and Eva. The revelations about the forming of the patriots was pretty cool too. I was super excited to get back to playing Solid Snake though.

(I also think Ill revisit this one again, seperating the origin of Big Boss from solid snakes adventures might allow me to like the cast more).

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

All I knew was snake dies. No clue how, just did. hadnt even seen gameplay, knew literally nothing else. was still excited to playing old badass snake. I loved the TV show stuff. Super weird but it was super cool. I went and watched the briefing for act 1 before too thankfully.

The gameplay was pretty damn cool. The controls were such a great step up from 3 and I loved sneaking through the battlefield. It was a really cool change of pace from sneaking around trying to cause no violence, instead now its trying to stay out of it. From there the gameplay variety really stood out to me. Act 2 had me paying attention to the enviroment tracking down Naomi, Chapter 3 had me sneaking through the streets tailing a dude, chapter 4 was an amazing throwback with no humans at all, and 5 was a great climax. The bosses, while visually werent anything special and didnt have any amazing personality, gameplay wise they were fucking awesome, especially how theyre basically reinvented MGS 1 boss fights. There was totally a lack of stealth, but I felt that was ok due to how many different things I was doing throughout the game. I think enough time has past since the 7th gen that for once I actually enjoyed on rails escape sequences too.

Story wise, this game did fanservice perfectly. Solid Snake is back as the PC, Meryl, Roy, Otacon, Naomi, Raiden, Eva, Big Boss, all back too. At this point I was really invested in the story and characters so seeing everyone back and how they were treated was so great through. The characters were all expanded upon with new arcs and new stakes, in fact the stakes were what made the fanservice feel so well done. Snake is dying and Liquids plan is working, there is all these characters who are back just like the fans begged for but what is the cost? Will they get the happy ending you would want or was bringing them back just a mistake which results in their demise? How much must be given up in order for them to earn a happy ending?

That is were this game excells to me. For someone who is invested in the characters, invested in the world, and wants to see them triumph then you should love it. The games logic feels like it had a thread holding it together at times and I can defintely see somebody who doesnt adore the cast absolutely despising it, for for people who are truly invested in them its damn great. The new characters were also great additions.

Seeing Raiden meet his son, Seeing Johnny go from a fucking Easter egg character to guy who shits his pants to one of the 3 characters sent on the final mission was so fucking cool, seeing Meryl get married and have a happy ending, Sunny going out and making friends, it was all magical.

The best was snakes ending. When I heard the gunshot I was super upset but i understood snake must go. But then that big twist was so awesome. seeing Big Boss and Solid Snake meeting up was one of my impossible dreams for the series that was kind of fufilled with that pile of flesh, but this was the real deal. Seeing Zero and Big Boss end right there was really, really damn sad yet beautiful and i had a GIGANTIC shock when snake ended up surviving. It was my only expectation of the game and was straight up told to you early into the game, but the fact he got to survive, be it a few days or a few months, felt like a reasonable ending. So much fighting and so much was lost, so many peoples freedom taken into this decades long battle, giving snake at least a few days of it was a weird happy ending, where it was good he got to be free, but sad that that is what Id consider to be "happy" in that fucked up world.

The game also had some stellar setpieces/scenes. Motorbike escape with Eva, split screen fighting alongside Raiden, Playing a straight up snipped of MGS1 before sneaking into Shadow Moses recreated, The super emotional end sequence with you crawling through the microwave while Johnny and Meryl shoot out and raiden is being a badass and all else, fucking amazing. The final boss with Liquid as they cycle through representing all previous games is truly something damn special too.

Apparently everyone thinks this game fucking sucks and I'm wrong too. Funny how things turn out.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes

    Its a 40 minute tutorial.

    Snatcher

Decided to give this one a whirl, I believe its the first game from the 80's ive completed too without exploiting save states (SMB1). It was awesome. It didnt stick with me like MGS or DS, but It was great. The music was great, it felt like it had just the right amount of challenge, I loved how it goes further than MGS with its mature content too, it fits the grim cyberpunk world. The story was gripping enough to keep me from start to finish and every single character was super likeable. I adored all the stupid little Kojima things being seen as early as his second (if im not mistaken) game. Metal Gear mk II being your partner in crime, Outer Heaven which is filled with Konami characters, fourth wall breaks, all that shit is gold. The shooting stuff got really fucking intense by the end, and Like with any VN/Adventure game of its nature it just had a weird and creepy feeling about it. They way you dont know what the fuck can pop up whenever you do anything can be pretty unsettling, just like it was playing Grannys Garden way back when.

I plan on playing policenauts some time too.

    Overall thoughts

MGS is an amazing story, where most entries can be played alone yet all have this amazing overarching narrative which is of course capped off in 4. The cast is lovable and theres so many stupid little quirks that I feel I will Find non Kojima games hard to turn back to.

My favourite character is Probably Raiden, very closely followed by Solid Snake and Otacon.

Favourite game is either 2 or 4, 2 for it going against fan expectations to deliver an amazing story and message shown through gameplay, and 4 for doing the polar opposite and fucking over absolutely everybody but those who truly love the cast to make a stellar conclusion to the series. 3 is still a brilliant game and story that I just feel needs some slight sanding to make it near flawless and MGS 1 is a somewhat simple yet great beginning for what becomes a convoluted yet awesome mess. Ground Zeroes is a 40 minute tutorial.

It was also really cool to see my stealth skills improve as I played through a stealth first series. I was able to blaze through the first few missions of TPP where previously I struggled.

    Conclusion

Snake and Otacon have the best bromance of all time.

    P.S.-

Anybody have any more suggestions? I think I might take a break from games for a few days before playing MGR and then Policenauts, probably playing MG1 and 2 and eventually V so I can boast about playing through every single Kojima directed game currently made.

I can enjoy basically any genre imaginable so long as it is a good game, and have access to play or emulate any system but the 360, Xbox One, and 3ds (though if Im super interested in a game I could probably borrow a console from a friend). Other favorites alongside MGS which is totally going in the Hall of fame range from games like Persona 3-5, Kingdom Hearts, FFVII and IX, and breath of the wild.
