Understanding Raiden in MGS2

Raiden is the most misunderstood character in all of Metal Gear. He's the main protagonist of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, which polarized the Metal Gear fan base back in 2001. Many people wanted to play as their favorite action hero from the previous installment, Metal Gear Solid. And they were disappointed when they played as someone who wasn't a total badass action hero. But why exactly do we play as Raiden?

The reason we play as Raiden throughout the Plant chapter was actually explained near the end of the game, during the codec conversation when the AI were talking to Raiden. The player wanted to play as the legendary hero Solid Snake. Raiden wanted to be a legendary hero like Snake. This played right into the Patriot's hands.

You did everything you were told, and followed every order you were given, even though the orders given were questionable and often times absurd like it was some kind of game. This and the fact that MGS2 was a retelling of the original Metal Gear Solid, the game with the legendary hero everyone wanted to be, was to prove a point narratively. 20 years later, we're living in the age predicted by that game. Raiden at the end of MGS2 threw away his dog tags to reject the Patriot's control and to be his own person, to pick a name for himself and find something to pass on.

That's why we don't play as Solid Snake, because it wouldn't work. Snake is a legendary hero that Raiden wants to be. Raiden needs to be his own person and think for himself.
