(spoiler warning for MGS:PW and MGSV) It's like 12:30 at night and I just thought of something.

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 11:42 PM PDT

:::Warning. This might not be an original thought. It may have been done by someone else in more detail then me as of now so keep that in mind.:::

So, in MGS:PW they had an almost fully co-op multiplayer. Something that they haven't done since to my knowledge. It's well implemented, giving you new ways to do shit then if you went through solo. I'm lucky enough to have a good friend to play it with still cause it's a b o p. But something kinda struck me as odd, Why is it a co-op story? Yeah I know it's probably something along the lines of "oohh look at our technology". but what if the correct way to play it is in full co-op? Nothing really changes about the story if you aren't a huge MGS nerd, but if you were, you'd realise something much more.

Let's imagine that it's canon to play it co-op. Throughout the story, if you don't play as any staff, you always look like big boss, and the second person is this unnamed grunt. And to my knowledge we dont learn his name, But what if we did? What if this unnamed grunt that helped big boss stop nuclear war and helped him stop a variety of bullshit was his most trusted friend (other than miller) someone he'd trust his identity with? Someone who he thinks highly of? Someone who big boss states as being "always the best man we had". what if this unnamed grunt turned out to be venom snake? It would kinda make sense and the more I look the more the dots connect.

Controversial Opinions of MGSV, and some Plot-Fixing Ideas

What I'm about to suggest here may be considered blasphemous by the die-hard Kojima fandom, but as a fan of the Metal Gear Solid series and a fan of subtextual storytelling, MGSV left a lot to be desired. It's been a few years, and after a recent playthrough, I've come to some controversial conclusions about The Phantom Pain and just wanted to share them with the community.

Things I wish MGSV hadn't done:

    • Vocal-chord parasites (it was a sub-plot that took away from the themes of race and revenge).
    • Quiet's over-sexualization (there wasn't a reason that made me eat my words, Kojima...)
    • Cassette-tapes (it's a cop-out for cutscenes, and the MGS series is known for super-long ones).
    • Weapons development (it takes away from replayability).
    • Just Angola-Zaire and Afghanistan (the game needs more variety, like a snowy environment).
    • Skullface's voice acting ("WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!?")

Things I wish MGSV had done:

    • The concept of "race" was poorly handled and often too conflated with the language and lingua franca. Race is a sense of identity drawn along genealogy ethnicity. Language is a common tongue that can cross those racial lines. MGSV gets idea of race at a very basic level, but does little to address how the erasure of a lingua franca would result in the world existing in perpetual warfare.
      • If MGSV could have contextualized the idea of race (say, having Venom Snake actually provide military aid to a country's government requesting Diamond Dog's help, only to have a change of heart given the ethnic struggle of those peoples change his opinions), then I think the idea of race could have been brought up more organically in the story's subtext.
        • The concept of "revenge" could have been brought up better in this way, too. What if Venom finds out that much of the world's ethnocentric civil wars were a result of Skullface's meddling behind-the-scenes, furthering his own goals of sowing chaos amongst the world to prove a point. Venom's personal feelings of revenge for MSF's destruction by Skullface could have been compounded by Diamond Dogs coming in to address the problems in those war-zones.
    • The plot-twist of Venom Snake being a body-double could have been handled better. Rather than having the twist revealed at the end of the game, the reveal should have come up a the halfway point in the game.
      • Having the reveal appear at the end of the game may have been Kojima's way of telling the player that "they are Big Boss, too." However, all it ends up making us feel is that our actions in the game's story feel "hollow." We were never the "real" Big Boss, we just thought that we were.
        • If the reveal that we were a body double were revealed at the half-way point of the story, it would have given Venom Snake the breathing room he needed to cement himself (and by extension, the player) as a worthy holder of the title of Big Boss.
        • Having Venom actually take actions throughout the plot (such as ending conflicts, rallying soldiers to his cause), aware of his existence as "the other Big Boss" would let us identify with him better -- we'd feel his obligation to live up to the Legend of Big Boss, and it would also open the door for Venom to do things his own way (maybe even in conflict with the ideals of the actual Big Boss, or the ideals of Master Miller or Ocelot).
        • We could watch the transformation of Venom Snake into the "demon" of Big Boss we would eventually fight against in the original Metal Gear. Actually seeing the character age into the 1995 version of himself would have been much more satisfying than the "metaphorical broken-mirror ending" we got in the final release of MGSV.

I would have loved it if we had a more organic approach to the "fall" of Big Boss.

MGS - PO+: Is there a point in preparing character loadouts since online is dead?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2021 02:25 PM PDT

Infinity missions seem to be all OSP (no loadout, equipment is on-site-procurement), since that is the case, the loadouts are now useless?

Just watched 2001: A Space Odyssey, made me realize that Peace Walker was heavily referencing the film. [SPOILERS]

    Posted: 11 Apr 2021 09:21 AM PDT

When you're inside the Peace Walker, disemboweling the machine by pulling its memory chips or whatever out while AI Boss talks to you... very obvious reference to HAL 9000 getting powered off, right down to the unnervingly red lighting.

It may contain grammar or syntax errors, mainly because English is not my mother tongue... so... sorry... I guess?
