Given the improved graphics and controls, it’s a shame MGSV never took place in environments like jungle, snow, etc to mix up the gameplay

Unpopular Opinion! MGS4 is best game

    Posted: 12 Mar 2020 12:36 PM PDT

I'm probably going to get downvoted to hell because of this, but here we go!

MGS4 is a great game especially for its time. You got octocamo, disguises, revamped CQC, a new (kinda weird but very welcome) gunsmith system, cardboard boxes + barrel, and a much better over-the-shoulder 3rd person perspective!

The massive amount of cutscenes also shows just how much effort was put into this game graphically and storage wise. They were very detailed, extremely pretty (for the time and even to this day) and played out without any lag or glitches. Games nowadays can't do most cutscenes without having glitches or awkward animations. Anyways, most cutscenes in MGS4 also had secret Easter Eggs as well, such as hidden First Person perpsectives which hint at future boss battles or other miscellaneous things (The first cutscenes with Naomi in South America have a lot of these). Flashbacks were also another way to show newbies the previous games or give nostalgia to veteran MGS players by just a press of a button, that shit was awesome and overall these things made cutscenes a lot more enjoyable than previous titles!

Codec was better than ever before, you had fully fleshed out 3d models, animations and backgrounds for most codec calls, basically it was Skype calls before Skype was a thing back then, but with extra crispy HD detail.

Honestly I gotta say, CQC was at it's peak in this game. Don't get me wrong, MGS5 and Peacewalker brought in the multiple takedown system which was a very cool addition. But those games simplified so much of what made CQC complex and fun to master from the previous games.

See, MGS4 let you grab enemies, pin them down on the floor and choke them. This allowed you to choke an enemy, getting the full stun without exposing yourself in the process. On top of that if you had a cqc compatible weapon you could chain several jabs at an enemy and knock them into the ground quickly, this was great for quick takedowns with a pistol or rifle in hand and looked badass. (They put a simplified version of this into MGSV). Also MGS4 brought back hold ups and body searches. Now you could search each enemy head to toe without dragging and dropping them multiple times.

Oh yeah, that reminds me, MGS4 was the last game to have dragging... Sad. :(

The Mk.2/Mk.3 was awesome, I loved playing as that little guy!

The stamina and combat stress system was a little annoying but in hindsight I appreciate it because it promoted sneaking and really made you feel like you had limits and weren't just an unstoppable force fueled by rations and instant ramen.

But yeah sorry for the rant I had to let it out, also MGS3 is my least favorite of the original series lol.

    Does MGS3 seem easier than MGS2 ?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2020 11:07 AM PDT

I've been replaying MGS2 and 3 on my Vita and while I did play MGS3 back in the day on PS2 then PS3 I'm finding it way easier to get into and less difficult than MGS2. When it comes to MGS2 I always find myself wanting to just rush in instead of just sneaking through like I do in 3. If anyone has an elaboration on why it's welcome.

Which has the better story, MGS3 or MGS1?

    A complete outsider with questions

    Posted: 12 Mar 2020 03:30 PM PDT

So, I just played through MGSV TPP and I had no idea wtf was actually going on for a good part of the STORY (Never played MGS before) . I listened to all tapes in my collection, but I'm not sure what to make of some parts. That's why I want to ask you guys some things about a select few elements of the narrative.

    1. Who is Zero, how and where did we first meet him?
    2. Who is Ocelot?
    3. Who is Kazuhira? Is he American or Japanese?
    4. How did the Patriots/Cipher come into beeing?
    5. What characters in the game are recurring characters at all?
    6. What's Outer Heaven?
    7. What's that sexy Cyborg suit from?
    8. Are the flying kid and burning unicorn with an angry guy on it normal in this franchise?
    9. Is Huey guilty?
    10. Are we the baddies?
    11. What happened in Nicaragua? (Revolution etc.)
    12. What was the "snake eater" operation? Who wanted to kill what snake version and why?
    13. And finally, who was Zero?

    Really small question. Don’t upvote...

    Posted: 12 Mar 2020 03:29 PM PDT

I started playing MGS V and got to Africa recently. I read on a steam forum for "things I wish I knew" tips and one guy said not to extract anyone from African until after a certain mission. And that I'll hate the game if I do.

Seems to be referring to some kind of game mechanic? I couldn't infer from the other comments. Can someone shed some light on this "mechanic"? Please and ty!

So is this why Liquid wanted Big Boss' remains in MGS1? (MGS5 spoilers)

    Posted: 12 Mar 2020 01:02 PM PDT

So to be clear I haven't played all the way through MGS1 yet but I've 100%'d 5, therefore I'm not sure if Liquid's motives are explained in the first game.

In 5, Miller has Eli's DNA tested to see if he and Snake are related, and the tests obviously come back negative since that isn't the "real" Snake. I'm wondering if because of that, Liquid became obsessed with proving that he was Big Boss' clone, hence why he would want his remains so he can perform a test himself.

    Im replaying mgs1...

    Posted: 12 Mar 2020 10:59 AM PDT

Im going to try and go for the best rank i can. I know big boss you have to try and not kill anyone and that got me thinking. Lets say im a newbie and have never played mgs before. Does the game expect you to kill people or just knock them out and sneak by???

    MGS v stupid companion idea..

    Posted: 12 Mar 2020 10:06 AM PDT

I know this sounds stupid.. But hear me out...

A New companion.. Maybe a mod.. Or a dlc.. Or whatever..

    Its a cat...

So this cat can run around a village or something silently.. Cuz its a cat.. And it has a tranquilizer gun strapped to its back.. You can order the cat to shoot... And when the cat shoots the recoil sends it flying 2 meters backwards... It does a backflip because of 2m recoil.. And them continues like nothing hpenned.

Yes.. Im not drunk.. I just feel like this is something kojima style.. I doubt we can have something official.. But Maybe a mod?.. Now im on PS4 so no happines for me.. But still.. Would be cool..

Is metal gear hard to play?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2020 12:48 AM PDT

I heard the ps5 may have backwards compatibility so i may buy all the metal gear games since they look hella fun. I remember that i bought devil may cry 1 and I couldn't even beat the spider boss so i was wondering if metal gear was hard. Im not a huge fan of hella hard games, and old games are usually pretty hard.

Selling some Metal Solid Play Arts Kai...

    Posted: 12 Mar 2020 09:26 AM PDT

Hello everyone, due to some financial issues, I have to sell some of my collection. I'm not sure if this is allowed on here, so please let me know if it is or is not. If it is not, what would be a good subreddit to post them on, aside from /r/toyexchange? Thanks in advance!

I have Quiet, Skull Face, Man on Fire and possibly a few others I am debating on selling. Please let me know if you're interested. I have pictures, too.

EDIT: I found my imgur album with them. Please disregard the non MGS items (unless you're interested in those).
