MGS4 Online Taboos (and why they're really dumb) Posted: 02 Nov 2019 05:39 AM PDT ITT I'd like to address my grievances with the MGO2 community, both past and present, by exploring community taboos and their affect on the game-play. I'd also like to clarify that these taboos are almost entirely in regard to Team Sneaking (TSNE) but may not always be exclusive to that mode. While this is obviously an opinion piece I intend to support my claims with objective deconstruction of the game-play mechanics involved. Lets begin with imo, the silliest taboo... Taboo #1: "No slit" Rules I literally cannot wrap my head around this one. Of all the stupid rules I see on TSNE servers this one is by far the least sensible. The only explanation I can think of is insecurity on the players behalf. People who impose this rule only do so in my eyes because they feel humiliated and powerless when CQC'd. Or they feel that it isn't fair because you can't "fight back" which is totally false. So to illustrate why this rule is poorly thought out we need only examine the "combat knife". So, lets compare the "combat knife" with the "CQC1+Blades3" skill setup. The "combat knife"...
The "Throat slit" (CQC1+Blades3)...
So please tell me which of those two mechanics seems more broken? It certainly isn't CQC. Also, keeping your eyes peeled is the whole job of defenders, so why are you mad at me for getting close enough to grab you? You would rather me spend the whole round sitting on a roof somewhere, just barely poking my gun out from behind cover, and spamming tranqs down range the whole round? Or toss a smoke-nade out of nowhere and stab you? (smoke-nades have no counter yet nobody complains) Taboo #2: "No CQCEX" Rules Everything that I covered under the slit taboo applies here. CQCEX is actually LESS effective at knocking a player out then a player using the stun knife with 0 skills equipped. The only advantage CQCEX provides that CQC3 does not is the ability to automatically counter CQC. So let me ask... why do people hate being countered THAT much? Same reason as before imo "People who impose this rule only do so in my eyes because they feel humiliated and powerless when CQC'd" The way people play TSNE you are extremely unlikely to fail because of CQCEX. 99.99 percent of the time you are going to die in TSNE from either getting stabbed or being shot in the head with the Tranq Pistol or M4. Guaranteed. Also worth pointing out that CQCEX isn't going to do jack shit against the vanilla "combat knife" if you get stabbed. Taboo #3: "No Rush" Rules This taboo isn't as objectively stupid as the first two, but I still hate it. So, TSNE is a "Capture The Flag" (CTF) game type. It's also the only CTF game I've ever played, in my entire life, where you will be called a "Noob" "lol rusher" and promptly kicked for playing the mode as intended... for capturing the flag... in a CTF game mode... Since this particular taboo is more about player preference, and is less objectively pointless than the other taboos, lets examine the affect "No Rush" rules have on player strategy in order to look at it objectively. The optimal way to play "No Rush" TSNE as defenders is to hide. Just run and hide somewhere. Your only objective is to survive long enough to run out the clock. If all the defenders just hang out in an easily defend-able area it forces the sneaking team to come to the defenders, pointlessly exposing themselves in the process. It only serves to make the game easier for defenders by turning it into team deathmatch and forcing the onus onto the sneaking team. Having a GA-KO and Kerotan both in play forces the defenders to split up, creating bigger gaps for the stealth team to slip through. Having an objective also stops it from turning into "Tranq Pistol and Smoke-Nades: The Game" As a Metal Gear player I like having an objective to sneak to. TSNE shouldn't be about direct confrontation, it should be about slipping by unnoticed. With no objective to retrieve stealth players are incentivized to spend the whole game on the roof of Urban Ultimatum taking pot shots. I do enjoy this community and most of you guys are pretty chill, and a blast to play with, so don't take this too seriously. But sometimes TSNE really feels like playing with that one kid on the playground who is constantly making things up and complaining when he loses. That kid who is always changing the rules to skew the outcome. If you have to dictate to me HOW I'm allowed to play TSNE with you, it isn't a real competition. I've even been called a "scan noob" after knocking out and scanning a guy.... figure that shit out. [link] [comments] | ||
